Here is something that I hadn't heard of previously but came across in the Intro chapter of the Repair Manual for Collision Damage manual. 4. INSPECTION MODE HINT: " . the PRIUS automatically stops the engine while the vehicle is stopped with engine warmed up...."(we all know this stuff) ".... Therefore, even if the vehicle stops for any reason such as a check of ignition timing, the inspection mode should be activated when continious operation of the engine is required." " . The PRIUS has a skid control as a traction control function. When the wheel speed of the front wheels exceeds that of the rear wheels, this funstion restrains the wheel speed of the front wheels. It is necassary to activate the inspection mode and reset the skid control when turning only the front wheels using the speedometer tester. " (sounds like something only a dealer might be doing) Follow this discription there is a whole "Chicken Dance" routine that I haven't tired yet and due to it's length and number of detailed steps, I won't attempt to post here. If anyone feels a need for trying this inspection mode, email me and I will scan a copy for you. Then in.. 5. SPECIAL NOTES FOR VEHICLE INSPECTION They go into another chicken dance routine and precautions for the "service mode" followed by a stern reminder that the service mode should be reset before road tests, etc.. Again it is much more detailed than I feel like posting here but will supply a scanned copy on request. Finally in.. 6. ACTION TO BE TAKEN FOR VEHICLE DAMAGE BY IMPACT This was of particular interest me since I am dealing with (presently) three (3) Prius Gen 2 "road kill" wrecks for repair or parting out. This is very detailed and may have been included in the emergency response section of the Toyota manual set. Still worth while repeating/rereading. Just something I feel might be worth sharing. Steve
As stated in the warning, the transmission may be damaged if service mode was not reset prior to road test. So, use it with caution. There are other simpler ways to keep the ICE running in Gen1. If duration is short, you can put the shifter to [N] after ICE started running. However, the HV Battery may get discharged too low if the duration is long. Alternatively, switched on A/C to MAX COLD should keep ICE running. I used the latter when I went for inspection. Vincent
I purchased a Gen 1 for my daughter. Had to replace the sauce battery which caused the monitors to restart their cycles. It won't pass the smog check because the Catalyst monitor is not ready. Is there a specific driving pattern I need to perform in order to ready the monitor?
