I've got a bone stock '02 prius, with 148k. I am in the process of replacing the main traction battery, I got a really good deal($1400 w/shipping) and am doing the install myself. The tires were replaced right before it was parked a year ago, and it was left with 1/3 tank of gas.
    Issues:

    1. Can I drain the tank? If not, what can I do to make sure I don't have problems on first start up?

    2. Can I buy a cheap ODBII adapter that connects to the TORQUE app for android? (standard one already owned for 1999 Camry in my possession)

    3. Can I upgrade the failing single CD player with a JVC unit? I'd like to keep the stock radio functioning, but want to add bluetooth calling and music. I saw a few ways to do that, but they're all pretty pricey for some wires, and involve borking the stock radio. Can I hack something together myself with a soldering gun and a wiring diagram?

    4. What size rim should I buy to replace the stock ones? My dad ran into a curb right before parking it, I think the rim's been bent. (didn't damage anything else though!) I also don't like the look.

    5. Do I need to worry about the inverter/inverter pump? All fluids regularly changed at dealership, until the day we parked it.

    6. anything I should worry about? The car was regularly maintained until battery failure, and it has been sitting for just over a year now.

I can't wait for my new car!

The 12 volt battery is likely to be sulphated unless it was charged regularly while the car was standing. Putting some "Stabil" in the fuel should get over any problem there, but I doubt there is any problem with the fuel. The inverter pump and coolant fluids should be ok after a level check. Change the engine oil after a short period when you have it running, to remove any condensation.

Not to be dumb, but where in the manual would it tell me how to do a fluid check? I'm not too familiar with the car yet. The 12v battery was dead, and only charged once 6 months in. Putting it on the charger overnight yeilded 11.8 volts, but the key isn't turning at all (no traction battery, but accessories should power on, right?) I poured stabil into the tank 2 months ago, and was planning on adding a bit of new fuel to the tank when I get everything in order. I was going to take it to a dealership after running the old fuel + new tank of gas for them to run diagnostics.fluid changes on it. is this a good idea?

At 11.8 volts off load the battery is scrap. It should be at 12.8 to 13 volts for a good one.
I am not completely familiar with the gen1 Prius "owning a gen2" but it could be something to do with the orange safety devise missing on the HV battery. This not only effectively splits the battery in two electrically, but also has two sensing wires that are joined together when the devise is installed correctly.
I do suspect the 12 volt battery to be the problem though.
OP Usnavystgc is much more familiar with the gen2 setup I will see if I can nudge him in this direction.

Well, crap.... I'll take it back where it was bought and see if they'll do anything... it is admittedly a few years old. I remember turning on the radio after it was parked, with no battery in it. Well, if he knows more, I'd appreciate any help and advice :)

I have sent usnavystgc a private message if he is on line he will respond, but otherwise you may have to wait a short while. He does feature here regularly.

Any 12 volt battery will work for testing purposes, but be sure you connect the battery the correct way round. The same applies if you use a jump pack or another car and jump leads. Reversing the connections does a lot of damage so beware. Even a split second with reverse connection is catastrophic.

Thanks! I'll keep a tab open. I'm looking into buying a new one - I'm seeing a fitting battery from Advanced Auto Parts - I'm seeing between $60-$80?

Be sure it is for a gen1 as the terminals are the other way round on all later Prius. The battery you want has the
positive + red terminal on the right with the terminals close to you. It should also have the small posts (JIS Japanese industrial standard) rather than the larger DIN standard.

This does come up from time to time. Did the old battery say GS or Panasonic? They were both officially available for the Gen 1. The GS had the smaller JIS posts. If the upgrade to the Panasonic was ever done, it has the DIN posts and the cables were already changed to match. So knowing which one you had influences what replacement will fit.

It was never upgraded, as far as I can tell. As far as the battery goes, its got smaller than normal terminals, if that's what we're talking about :)

There are several options for a stereo but I think the best and cheapest is the Dual xdma 6630. That will give you Bluetooth and everything. A pc member known as 3prongpaul is an expert on this.

When do you expect to get your new hv battery?

I have a JVC unit already.... From my old vehicle. Is the unit you mentioned easier to plug and play thougj? I'd gladly spend $100 for nocutting/soldering.... I should have it... Friday or Saturday. My bank account bounced (oops) and it didn't go through this friday, so... Its a doorman 587-000 from RockAuto. Its shipping to North Florida.

There is no easy way to keep the stock radio working and add an aftermarket radio (and why would you want to do this? the stock radio is pretty basic) Best to buy the adaptor harnesses mentioned in this thread Radio Auxiliary Install? | PriusChat and do everything by removing the glovebox and going in from the side. Don't attempt to pull the dash center plastic "T" panel away or it may break. No factory wires need to be cut so you can always remove the aftermarket radio and revert back to stock radio.

The "small" gen 1 battery with pencil posts is a PITA to upgrade. You have to change the battery tray and terminals to use readily available batteries. You can buy a battery tray/terminal kit from the dealer for around $45 that will allow you to use 51R battery with a little bending/cutting.

Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks! The only question I had was in regards to the factory connectors. Everything I'm looking at has 2 wires on each side, on a row of several more wires (or pins, if that makes any sense). (what you linked) [ xx___xx over xxxxxxx] vs. (what I see) [xx___xxx over xxxxxxxx] on the connector. In other words, the pins don't match. I'm happy with ripping apart the glovebox to do it, I just want to make sure I have everything I need. I picked up this part locallay (Metra 70-1761 Radio Wiring Harness For Toyota 87-Up Power 4 Speaker) but again, pins didn't match the CD player (or radio???) connector. I'll source the other part today and get working on it! Thanks for the help!

Oh! I had a question about the radio - I have no care beyond integration with the MFD to leave it intact. Leaving the factory clock intact would be great! Again, thanks :)

Remove the Toyota CD player, you'll need the brackets off it to mount your radio. There is also a "Y" cable with the CD player you can remove. The cables I linked to mate with the car radio, not the CD player. You still need the harness that came with your aftermarket radio (usually big black plug on radio end), all the splicing is done between the aftermarket harness and the adaptor cables you need to buy. No vehicle wires need to be cut/modified in any way, look over the photos in the thread I referred to. Cables you buy should mate with the factory radio 2 connectors highlighted with blue tape.

Step 1: Remove CD player and Y-cable. Done.

Step 2: grab aftermarket radio adapter. Done

Step 3: aquire adapter cables - partly finished.

    Step 4: follow splicing procedure

On female part (Metra 70-1761), i'm "splicing" wires from aftermarket radio kit onto the black, red, orange, and yellow wires only, right? Photo is blurry on the overall shot - I can't tell what connectors are where. :(

For reference, I'm installing the JVC KD-X50BT seen on Amazon. Again, thanks :)

yes, black, red, orange and yellow "T" into the same physical position in the other connector...look at the last two photos carefully (even though I used a scrap Toyota connector so colors are different)
