    Hi Prius Chatters,

First or second post here. Mostly I've been lurking and learning, but now I have a question that I don't see a good answer to in my searches:

We recently noticed the blinking red "key" icon when we turn the car off. I swear to god it wasn't there before we brought it in for the 5K service. Has anybody else had any experience with this thing? How is it supposed to act?

    How ours acts:
FYI - we have smart key system.
Upon turning off the power, the red "key" icon comes on solid. After ~30 seconds to a minute, it begins to blink, and stays that way until the car is turned on. Not when it detects a fob nearby, but Power On.

Neither I nor my wife ever saw the icon before and it certainly wasn't solid upon Power Off, and constantly blinking all night until the car was turned on. Wth?

    Anybody?

It has been blinking when my 2004 is off for the last 2.5 years. Don't worry, its normal.

Mine has always behaved exactly as you describe with the exception of coming on solid when I turn the car off. Mine just starts blinking as soon as I power down and keeps blinking until I power up again. Both of our cars have SKS but you must have the theft deterrent system activated and I do not, thus the 30 second wait for the blinking to start when you power down. That is the time the theft deterrent system is activating. I think everything is working exactly as it should be.

<_< 2004 Owner's Manual, pages 6 and 20. This is the "immobilizer/Theft Deterrent" system indicator light. It lights when the key is removed, or with SE/SS when you turn the car off.

May be different page numbers in the '05 '06 Manuals, but the information is found in your Owner's Manual. Although the Owner's Manual is not well indexed, there is a wealth of useful information therein.

Yeah yeah yeah, I RTFM  That's the first thing I did.
There's a LOT more than just pages 6 and 20 that refer to this thing in mine, but it still doesn't explain why it wasn't doing this when we bought it and it is now. Maybe I'll have to go back to it to see if there's a way to disable it besides disconnecting the battery. I guess a call to the service dept. and a lot of detective work to find the right mechanic and talk to him/her is in my future. I get the feeling it was something they missed when preparing the car for pickup or something.

<_< My best guess.. You just didn't notice it prior to the 5K service. In any event... it is normal.

I might suggest reading it again because you have obviously missed a few things. I suspect you missed the light flashing also because it almost certainly was doing it all along, just as it should.

Listen guys, just because I haven't had a Prius since '04 doesn't make me a fool. I might have missed something in the manual since it's written a bit awkward, and it is remotely possible that two different people missed a bright red blinking light on the dashboard for two months and then suddenly noticed it, but just asking the question "almost certainly" doesn't deserve the snotty attitude <_< . I searched the forum and read everything I could find on the subject before I asked.

Maybe if I used a picture of my pet as an avatar?...

i don't know of anything a tech could do to make that light start or stop flashing, honestly.

No? It just works from the get go? That's certainly how Toyota talks about it in the manual. I do not know. I have been pretty thoroughly observing this car's behavior. Well, the important thing is that everybody says it's acting normal now. Thanks.

No worries. You're not the first person to go "when did that thing start blinking? I (swear) didn't notice it before!" I didn't keep track but you're probably No. 3 or No. 4 going by memory

The light is the immobiliser light.

When it's solid, it's getting ready to set (pre-arm??). When it's blinking, the immobiliser is set. It blinks to tell would-be thieves that the car is armed with some sort of theft-deterrent system.

Too bad it doesn't come with one of those alarms that talks and says, "please stand away from the car" when folks come too close.

Hmmmm, *that* kind of reminds me of older Chryslers; you could get in and ask it, when is a door not a door...? And, if you didn't close the door all the way, it would reply, "[when] a door is ajar..."

c'mon, it's Friday afternoon, for gawdsakes.

yep, normal. unless, someone forgot to uh, plug in the body ecu at the factory... that'll make that light not blink.

however, without body ecu... car no go. so that's out.

immobilizer has to be present for car to operate. immobilizer present means blinking light when car is off. trust us, it's easy to miss, but there's no way there could have been anything missed in vehicle prep or changed at the oil change. don't blame the dealer, like i said they're not even capable of doing anything for that. it just blinks. trust me. ;)

So I just experienced the same thing. After 1800 miles the immobilizer light started blinking when it had not done so previously. Apparently this is the normal function, but like several others, it started up "suddenly". My wife and I have driven for more than a month and not seen this blinking light. I had to look up the manual and then come online to figure out if this was normal (or not).

My daughter who is home from college and does not drive the vehicle noticed this when she got out of our van (and could see inside the Prius). My wife looked and then came and got me. I am certain we would have noticed before this, it is obvious.

Thanks for the fourm and the answers. At least I can sleep tonight.

<_< In my new 2007 TE, the 'immobilizer' light blinked from the first day - 4 miles on the clock.

I drove to the Toyota dealership today because I noticed the blinking red car with a key for the first time. I've owned my Prius for a year. I can't believe it has been doing it all this time without my noticing. Toyota said it was normal and should always flash. I'm going to ask around to my Prius friend....mostly because the sudden notice of it seems to be a common thread.

It's funny that I just came across this thread because I had my first oil change recently, and a few days later I noticed this same light blinking in my car for the first time. I'm not saying that the light hasn't been blinking since day one when I got the car, but I just noticed it now. Of course it was at night when I noticed it, and I don't drive the car much after dark, so that's probably why I didn't see it before now.

I also noticed the dealer forgot to reset my maintenance required light after the oil change - but that's easily fixed.

I stumbled on this thread for the obvious reasons. I have had my 2009 Prius for 3000 miles now and today I added some washer fluid. This was the first time I had opened the hood. Then low and behold the flashing immobolizer light. My wife and I also swear that it was not flashing previously. Oh well at least it is not a "malfunction".

It was flashing, you just didn't notice it. You aren't the first.
