I'm Too Old To Fix These Things

I'm 62 years old, disabled, in poor health, and trying to get a 2006 gen 2 Prius to run on a 19¢ per month disability check. I swore I'd never look under the hood of a car again after having the stoopidest accident (I turned my back and a 280 pound, 25 foot tree branch fell on me sending me to the ER and many pain specialists after that) while replacing the coolant control valve and storage tank. I am also the least experienced/skilled false mechanic ever to be on the forum, so please try to tolerate my total lack of knowledge and terminology. After the ordeal, the stoopid thing was happy. All the warning lights stopped lighting up, and we were getting a smooth ride and the mileage became better than ever. Now every light, including the red triangle of death and destruction comes on and off intermittently. One shop tells me to buy newer new parts and start over. One told me to get a new 12V battery because the one I had was old and underpowered for its mission in life. Another shop offered me a senior citizen discount and they would do all the work for me at the bargain price if $1,100. The last shop was incredibly helpful and empathetic. He suggested I probably didn't flush the system correctly and with just a little patience he would teach me the correct procedureby phone. Knowing we needed the new battery, whether we could afford it or not (wife's hours cut because of covid-19 and the IRS messed up the stimulus dollars so we may still have to wait until Christmas for that), I read the forums like I always do, crawled in the trunk, followed "disconnect this before that", etc to the letter, and the multi function display even started working right again. Nothing else changed, though, except I know our car is eating better with the new battery. Becoming disabled was embarrassing at first, then it progresses to humiliation, but I'm sure almost everyone here understands taking care of your family's needs come before all else. My immediate question is can flushing/bleeding the coolant system really correct this? I forgot to mention I have the cheapest OBD2 on the market,a I don't know how to use it, but when the warning lights are on I get either P1121 or P1122. My wife drove to work with the scanner in her car, but I know it's one of those and I think it's 1121. If you can, please forgive the long diatribe. I'm apparently needing to vent some frustration, but I would be the most grateful guy alive if someone, anyone can help me help my family. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Priuschat. While I have no experience with the P1121 (coolant control valve), I have experienced intermittent Red Triangle when engine oil is low. . Raise the hood and do a visual check of all your levels (oil level, radiator and Inverter), Also, check your Inverter fluid for the 'swirling' motion that shows your pump is working. Other visual items that are easy to check, are your engine air filter and throttle body.

First -- my dad -- always thought being too old was a poor excuse.

But, not having walked in your boots, but having been in your "walker" for a time myself, I can sympathize -- even to the point of knowing not much.

But, I think hitting Matt up is a good idea.

Hey, Bisco, I have trouble walking and took a BIG FALL last night while trying to spray poison oak. My car needs washing.....not that far from Boston, am I -- and it's nice here this time of year. The vultures have returned from South America. hint, hint.....

All the free doggie kisses you want.....opps, think I am doing topic drift....nah...that's mendel's job.

Hi Sam, thought I would ask if you have bleed air out of coolant system after replaced control valve?
Due to design, air can be trapped inside after fluid refill and you may get a code if there's air in the system..

Gen 2 Prius have bleeding valve in radiator and as well for the inverter.(at least I believe it's for the inverter)
Both locations are fairly close together, if you stood front of your Prius and looking down at radiator towards right hand side.

Thank you for the info and pics. I was actually hoping this might be the problem because I'm concerned I did a poor job when I replaced the parts. If that's the case, we have no discretionary funds and no reason to think I'd ever get it right. So, would this be your first, second, third, etc recommendation for us to pay someone who knows what they're doing to get it right? If this isn't the right thing, we have to wait a full month before we find out we probably can't afford the next thing so we have to choose correctly if possible.

Thank you again for your time, patience, and I'm hoping to pick the right path with good advice.

    Stay safe and healthy.

If you replaced the storage tank known as CHRS tank you definitely have a air locked system. The coolant loop bleed is difficult on a G2 lots of dealers cant even do it right. The air lock is bad it can overheat the engine badly and possibly blow the head gasket so be careful. It can take your engine out. It will throw a thermometer looking icon if it over heats on the dash then its to late. There is no temp gauge on the G2 very very stupid.

The only way to get a CHRS air lock out of the engine loop is to outboard cycle the CHRS pump thereby moving the air lock along to where it can be bled. Right now all the stukc air is in that CHRS tank. Hopefully you plugged the electrical connector back into the CHRS pump. It will throw a DTC is you dont.

So...to cycle the pump you remove the CHRS pump relay and jump across the relay legs with a wire and that will force the pump on.
Sorry for your troubles but appreciate your honesty on your mechanical talents. This relay jump out may be beyond your skills or courage and if done wrong could cause some damage. But hears the info anyway a novice G2 mechanic may not know.

But once the pump is cycled please see ttou68's post and notice the long stemmed hex tool igoing through the hole. There is a radiator bleed er that tool is opening. You make the car ready....cycle the pump with the relay jumper then open up that rad bleeder and coolant will leak out that's good let it leak out till it stops sputtering and is just solid fluid leaking out. Do the cycle dance bleeder open repeat till it stops sputtering.all the while making sure the radiator is kept full by opening the radiator cap and monitoring its level.

Please use the search forum tab up top and search engine coolant bleed or CHRS pump theirs a good write up on the relay jumper and what pins to use by Pat Wong.

Also sounds like you have a bad 12 volt battery so make sure all the doors are closed and lights out while working on the car. if not that will kill your battery and your day goes from bad to worse real quick. That battery will have to dealt with and with a bad back it is near impossible to get that 12 volt out of its hole in the trunk by yourself without it hurting you.

And lastly to absolutely ruin your day you have a ticking time bomb in the trunk the failing hybrid battery. Its pretty amazing it is still working on a 2006. Its the most most posted thing on this site. All the G2 battery's are failing including mine or about to fail. Its just the vintage and the miles. I thought you should know sorry and be aware that will be a big dollar investment so keep that in mind before dumping any substantial money in the car chasing other things. Post the mileage on the car.

Search again for hybrid battery or just look around the G2 forum and you'll see what I mean about the hybrid battery. It sucks

    Good Luck.

    You're welcome Sam,

If you haven't bleed the air out of the system, then you should review the attached videos.
It's a pretty easy task, and you should be able to DIY if you are able to install the parts..
Prius is a very durable vehicle, tougher then most people believe. Make sure all you connection is attached without leak and plugged in, all you have to do is bleed the air out and you should be good.

I've watched it a few times, before I performed the task when I repaired my first Prius years back...
It's not difficult, just have to understand how the system works. And the part 1 and part 2 videos I attached, have been very helpful to me.

Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress!

You're very kind, and thank you. I'm not well today, but as soon as I'm able to carry on a coherent conversation I will absolutely call this guy. Thank you all for your altruism.

Again, thank you. I'm not well enough today but I was looking for exactly what you sent and hopefully tomorrow, or possibly later today (since I had my debilitating stroke, I never know in advance when I'm able to be productive) I will give this my best shot. The one shop I called who was most helpful offered to bleed/flush the thing for $80. Since I am now accident prone and have literally lost all self confidence, would it make sense to let him do this as my first effort?

    Thank you again.

I've got some reading to do and I will go over everything you so generously offered. I did put a new 12V battery in and found that the one I had was underpowered. All of a sudden the multi display works again! Also, the hybrid battery lasted almost 200,000 miles before I had to replace it. The new hybrid battery has less than 50,000 miles and the 12V hasn't even made it to the freeways in Fort Worth yet. We can't afford a new car and we both still love this one, so we will keep it until Dallas stops working on their freeways.

You put a ton of effort into your post trying to help us and I want you to know I will not abuse such kindness. Thank you.

If you're not physically well to perform the task, then perhaps the shop you trust would be the next best choice..
Make sure that you and the shop both understand exactly what work needs done and the fees involved...
I hope you feel better soon, and good luck!

    Hello, Ed,

Please accept my apologies for the delay. I'm not going to blame my stoopid body or brane.

The truth about my back depends on the doctor and how much he charges for his specialty surgery. I'm STILL trying to get ANY specialist to give my PCP a good answer. When she's happy, I'll know what's happening and you have my word I'll be back to let you know. You and everyone here have been life saving encouragement to me through the sincere tone in your comments.

I had the car running a while and it's started messing up again. So, with good weather and the tiniest of luck, I'll be working on Mama's car again.

    Tomorrow.

Please, if any of you know someone who shows signs of depression, extended periods of low self-esteem, or, God forgive, suicidal tendencies always take them serious and never give them time to think about it too long. A car is nothing more than that, but a life is everything and I've seen otherwise extraordinarily strong psyches get those two priorities confused which means I won't see them again until Heaven. God gave me Faith, the indescribable love of family, and the kindness of strangers here in this place all in the right time and sequence. It wasn't hyperbole to say you are life savers. All the bad things piling up allow me to empathize with the worst intent toward myself. I have problems with a car, my brane and body do not play well together, none of the above fit inside my wallet, BUT, look how much I'm blessed!!

    Thank you again.

    Mr.68,
I wanted to stop by and say "thanks" again for the great input. I'm embarrassed to say that even with all the hard work you put into helping me I apparently didn't do something right so I have something to look forward to tomorrow. However, you should know that people such as yourself who are willing to give so much of your time to a nobody stranger such as myself means more than I could express.

So, from the heart, "Thank you."

I'm not going to pretend I know your situation (as I haven't been through what you have), but, I can say I have had some very challenging moments in my life. Often, when I look back on them, I wonder why I am still here. The answer that came for me is.............it ain't my time yet! So Sam, keep typing, keep moving and know that even your post here, has done something to us. Made us think a little more about the little things and gave us a little more gratitude to the little things. Keep us updated please!!
