I sure loved my 2019 Gen 4 LE.
But it was stolen from in front of my house, yesterday morning. We actually found it... Not law enforcement, WE, as in my GF and I, found it about 36 hours after the fact, but it has been completely destroyed from the inside out ☹️
I guess this whole post could be about it being stolen... Like how did it happen ? I even had an alarm.
And maybe about how the cops have basically told me, they really are not even going to look for the thieves... And even if they caught them, they'd likely be out in couple days... And because they are likely homeless meth heads, I wouldn't ever get any restitution out of them anyway. Just be thankful I had insurance....

But I digress, I'm going to need a new Prius fast ! I know they are super hard to find, especially in Cali, and I expect to pay at least $6 or 10k over MSRP. But I won't pay $20k "over MSRP" like my buddy just did, when his 2019 Prius LE got totalled ! I'm sorry, but I can't bring myself to pay $48K for a Prius with a $28 MSRP.
I'm willing to travel to freaking China to get the thing, but then I hear Toyota is somehow preventing out of state sales ? Must be a way to get around that stupidness ? Who would I have to bribe ?
I do ride share for a living. So without a Prius, I'm also out of a job.
Any advice for how to get a brand new LE fast, in Nor Cal ?

Oh, check out my 2019 LE as we found it yesterday ☹️... Dash ripped to pieces... Traction battery stolen... Engine compartment trashed...
Probably cat converter stolen (couldn't see under car very well) but would assume) My custom SQ stereo system stolen. Only about $1500 but it sounded fantastic. I built the sub enclosure myself. They even found my digital sound processor buried in the dash "behind the stock head unit" ...

One Toyota In Oakland is selling Toyotas without markups. But theres a 3 month wait for some models... Wouldn't hurt to give them a ring and try.

I wonder what they would say if I told them, wow, that's great !
But I'll give you an extra $3k anyway, to get one in 1 month ?

I think the 3 month wait is because it is on order/in transit. Nothing you can do about that.

Well you did say, on some models... So maybe I need to talk to them either way, just to see what they can do for me ? I don't want anything special. Just an LE... Any color but black or white.

Give them a ring, as of right now, there are some LEs on the inventory. Maybe worth a drive down here to the East Bay... (probably a small break from the heat wave compared to Sacto LOL). The have a One Person approach, theres no "finance manager" you see, your one saleman(women) will do all the paper work from start to finish.

That sounds really good ! I will actually give them a holler tomorrow and just tell them my situation. I expect to be getting a check within a week... Then selling my truck, and I'll be ready to write a check for it, and walk out owning it. I will report back here with what I find out Much thanks !

Talk to the dealer, you never know what they can do in case of a totalled car. I assume it's insurance?

It's the state of California, not Toyota, pushing this. It dates from back when the California models were the only ones with catalysts and higher price tags.

So now you can't buy a car in Nevada for example, unless you are also willing to register/plate/pay tax on it in Nevada and put at least 7,500 miles on it before re-registering it in California.

Paying a California dealer $3k to get it sooner is probably cheaper.

Hmmm.... This actually starts to put ideas in my head. If it were April right now, I was actually planning a 6000'ish mile round trip anyway. I could pick up the car in Nevada, and just keep on driving. By the time I got back, I'd could have over 7500 miles on it, re-register it and Bam
BTW, last April, I drove my Prius 9500 miles ! It was absolutely the coolest road trip of my life. Cheapest too. Slept in my car with climate control set at 72F... Truck stops for showers, gas, ice, etc.
Can't wait to do that again in my new Prius

But wait...... Who knows where I'm driving and when ??? What if I bought it in NV. Registered it there. Drive it 7500 miles, and reregistered it here ? Even if all that cost an extra $1000, that would be chump change if I could save $10-20K ?
Telling you, I think I can work around this stupid system...

Well, check to make sure the rules are still like that. And it's not like the new car shortage is limited to California. You're going to see slim pickings and jacked up prices anywhere you go.

Also check on the tax and insurance implications- since it's a business for you and all.

Dang those pictures are painful to look at...jerks! I'm wondering how-the-heck did they get around the security system to get her running...they obviously weren't rookies, especially seeing how they removed that high-voltage battery unit! (Instant death if you do it wrong.)
Good luck on your Prius search....I haven't seen mark-ups here in Colorado but there is a waiting list when you order one.

Oh for sure ! I re-search, and re-re-search stuff to the end of the earth. I'm kind of OCD like that :) Of course I'm still going to look for deals locally too. I'm keeping all options on the table.

Yea, the whole thing is crazy... and I've thought about everything you mentioned. On the one hand, you would think they were professionals getting past the alarm... messing with that high voltage battery, etc. Except that it was SUCH a messy job, it looked like it was the work of of 6 meth heads. One thing that would explain all of this though, would be that it was hauled into a garage somewhere, and the big, expensive stuff, traction battery, cat converter (probably, although again, couldn't see under the car very well.. it also had one flat tire) all in a couple hours, then was pulled back out and dumped in the middle of that homeless camp > like, "here, want someplace to sleep" ? Maybe that's where it was picked over by all the meth head vultures ? BTW, that area is kind of an industrial area, with big garages all over the place...

I have to give a huge NOPE to this as I'm friends with many police officers and I have a good friend who's moved up to being an FBI field agent up in Denver. These folks deal with the scum of the earth each and every day...I'm talking domestic disturbances (POS guys beating on their women and kids) and crack heads and drug lords and violent gang members which they have to deal with each and every day (In cities, roughly 50% of the calls are for domestic violence and who knows what's going to greet you when you knock on that door....a drunk with a gun or knife?
I have nothing but mad respect for men and women willing to try and maintain some law and order and peace in this crazy world we live in....hats off to each and every one!
