NY is requiring me to install a breath alcohol ignition interlock on my 2008 subsequent to a DWI. The installer initially estimated 2 hours instead of 1 because it is a pushbutton start. Comes time to actually do it, he says he discussed it with Toyota (in Germany, don't know why) and got schematics, and the way to do it right is to remove the entire dashboard and all electronics forward of it. New estimate: 2 days, at $85/hr. Oy.

If anyone can provide instructions from Toyota which show a quicker way to install such a device, I would appreciate hearing from you. I don't think that homebrew instructions would carry any weight in this situation.

There is an installer in Henrietta, NY at The Stereo Shop. Check with them and let me know how you make out. Plenty of vehicles with push button stat and infrared keys have been installed in only a few hours. 2 days sounds a bit much, more like 4 or 5 hours minimum I would guess

    2008 Prius Install

    12 VOLT CONSTANT
    WHITE (+)
LOCATION: FRONT CONNECTOR AT TOP OF POWER DISTRIBUTION BLOCK (UNDER DRIVER DASH TO LEFT OF PCS MODULE)

    STARTER
    YELLOW
LOCATION: AT PCS MODULE UNDER DRIVERSIDE DASH (GRAY MODULE, HELD IN PLACE BY TWO 10MM BOLTS)
*NOTE* THERE ARE TWO YELLOW WIRES IN THE PCS MODULE CONNECTOR, WHEN THE "POWER" BUTTON IS DEPRESSED ONE WILL HAVE A RAPID 12V PULSE, DO NOT USE THIS ONE. THE OTHER YELLOW WIRE
WILL INDICATE A GROUND CIRCUIT WHEN TESTED AND AFTER THE "POWER" BUTTON IS DEPRESSED WILL HAVE A 4-5 SECOND 12V SIGNAL AND THEN RETURN TO GROUND CIRCUIT, THIS IS THE STARTER CIRCUIT.

    IGNITION
    BLACK (+)
LOCATION: FRONT CONNECTOR AT TOP OF POWER DISTRIBUTION BLOCK (UNDER DRIVER DASH TO LEFT OF PCS MODULE, SAME CONNECTOR AS 12V CONSTANT)

    HORN
    ORANGE (-)
    LOCATION: STEERING COLUMN HARNESS

THIS VEHICLE WAS EQUIPPED WITH A KEYLESS IGNITION SYSTEM AND IS STARTED BY DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL THEN DEPRESSING THE "POWER" BUTTON ON THE DASH, THE DASHLIGHTS LIGHT UP AND THERE IS A SLIGHT PAUSE THEN THE GAS ENGINE STARTS, AFTER THE INITIAL RECHARGE PERIOD, THE ELECTRIC MOTOR KICKS IN. THE START PROCEDURE AFTER THE IID INSTALL IS, DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AND DEPRESS THE "POWER" BUTTON TO ACTIVATE THE UNIT, THEN DEPRESS THE "POWER" BUTTON A SECOND TIME TO DISENGAGE THE START-UP OF THE VEHICLE (ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE WON'T BE ABLE TO START WITHOUT A PASSING TEST, THE VEHICLE'S MODULES WILL ONLY ATTEMPT ONE START THEN SET TROUBLE CODES AND FLASH WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS), ONCE A PASSING TEST IS GIVEN, DEPRESS "POWER" BUTTON AND VEHICLE WILL START NORMALLY.
I WAS UNABLE TO FIND ANY EASY ACCESS OR SHORTCUTS WITH THIS INSTALLATION, ALTHOUGH IT WAS MY FIRST 2008 HYBRID WITH KEYLESS IGNITION, IT TOOK A BIT LONGER THAN I HAD ANTICIPATED DUE TO LOOKING FOR ANY HEPFUL TRICKS. THIS INSTALL IS NOT FOR THE "FAINT OF HEART", EVEN AFTER HAVING ONE OF THESE UNDER MY BELT, I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A FOUR HOUR OR BETTER INSTALL, WHEN THINGS GO SMOOTHLY. THERE IS MUCH DISASSEMBLY INVOLVED AND VERY LABOR INTENSIVE, SO.......PACK YOUR LUNCH AND POSSIBLY YOUR DINNER, I KNOW I WILL IF I RUN ACROSS ANOTHER ONE OF THESE.

I hope his helps....no way this is more than 5-6 hours. We do a few of these right up to the 2010's. You wont find instructions from any dealer/manufacturer I am afraid. This is not something they would ever approve of. Although they do install at a lot of dealerships. This sounds like a high est just to hope you won't go thru with it.

    Good Luck to you

    Hey Lordbah -

I know someone who installed an interlock on their Prius and it only took an hour. That's so weird that it would take a couple of days. I know it's a Smart Start ignition interlock and they sell them in NY. Maybe google Smart Start and see where the nearest location is to you?

    Hope that helps!

Just a word of warning... in order to do the install on that car that fast they have to be tampering with the circuit off of the brake pedal. this has the possibility of causing problems. Is this really the car you want to shortcut?

    Either way best of luck

It's been a while since this thread was updated, I'm wondering the outcome Lordbah? Were you able to successfully install the interlock device? I'm looking at having to put one into a 2010 Prius. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
