Ignition Interlock Devices for Prius

Recently I was asked to look into the best ignition interlock device for a Prius. Of course they all say they are; Smart Start,intoxalock, low cost interlock, etc. I wondered if any friends of Bill W had any advice?

It turns out there are very few alcoholics driving Gen2 Pri.

After a lot of shopping I selected “Low Cost Interlock”
Not because they were low cost but because their interlock device was the smallest and had the features like an app to warm it up and they hired some of the best audio experts “Audio Innovations of Fresno” to do their installs. Even so, the installation didn’t go as they had planned, singe the only Prii they had installed IID’s on were younger than 2010 and I am a Original owner of a 2005 with 614,000 miles.
The install was estimated at $250 cash and I paid them $300 and received the white glove treatment you would expect for a $50 tip.

What they explained was that they had to interrupt the start switch or the push button itself. And draw power (12volts) from the battery to power the interlock device.
So, when I enter the car, or use the app, I start the IID and let it wake up for ten seconds, then give my “sample” or blow, then press the power button and the car comes to life.
This installation does come with a caveat; on occasion I will need to give a sample to turn the car off, or the push button may not shut the car off unless I do.

The cord draping out from under the dash is the most annoying part of it. I may ask for a modification and have it mounted I. The center counsel arm rest

Quick note to installers if they do the same the car will only start when the key fob is NOT inserted in the slot ! Keep it in your pocket and if you do not have the feature on your Prii I’m not sure it will work.
