With all the talk lately of service bulletins I was thinking if i should ask my dealer to check and see if anything should be done to my car. My Prius was made in Jan. and it's got 17,000 mi. on it and rungs great. I've always been of the opinion, if it an't broke don't fix it. So what do you all think, if your Prius is running great should you just leave it alone or should i ask my dealer to check the service bullentins next time I bring it in for an oil change.

It's your choice. There certainly have been bad experiences by some, but most of us have been fairly uneventful for the most part.

I think the SSC40D is probably pretty important since if you do have a problem they may not be able to tell you what it was without it....then they'll do it "after the horse is out of the barn" anyway.

The LSC 40E is important (and very benign) to prevent future problems.

The fuel guage thing is all personal preference. Benefits are purely 'cosmetic' issue...and as my story tells there are some risks.

Thanks Evan, but what's the LSC 40E?

If the 40D applied to mine I'd do it. If a real problem ever developed it would be very useful to have the trouble codes. Similarly for 40E, which replaces the hood seal to prevent water from entering the drive compartment (see http://priuschat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?...&highlight=40e)

OTOH, the fuel pipe/computer TSB EL010-04 does apply to mine and I don't plan to have it done. It just looks too invasive and risky for something that to me barely registers as an annoyance.

I want to say the 40D is an 'update' to the Prius software so it can communicate with the diagnostic tool at the dealer...to pull error codes from the Prius if you have the big exclamation point light up on the dash.

Due to a software/programming glitch some codes are not recorded when there is a fault/MIL code produced in some of the earlier versions of the '04 Prius. The 40D updates that and is supposed to make sure all MIL error codes are readable by the diagnostic tool.

If your Prius needs 40D then Toyota should have already sent you a letter. You can always call 1-800-GOTOYOT and ask explcitly whether any Technical Service Bulletins or Limited Service Campaigns apply to your VIN.
