ICE still running

I've noticed on three separate occasions, that driving through our residential neighborhood, that the ICE is still running. Consumption prior to this last 5 minute section would be 46 - 48 mpg over 30 minutes.

Going 23 - 25 mph, I would expect ICE to be off. SOC is high but not green.

Is there a setting that needs to be changed?

Should I try installing an EV mod to force the ICE off?

    Any advice on this issue?

You probably never got into Stage 4 of operation. If you don't get to S4 unless you exceed 34mph and then release the pressure from the accelerator to get into stealth. To get into S4 you need to come to a complete stop while the ICE is still running and hold your foot firmly on the brake until the ICE shuts off. The ICE should, then, shut off any time your foot comes off the accelerator.

That low speed road you mention in the post sounds like an ideal place to practice a nice Pulse & glide. And yes, alternately you could install an EV mode to force the ice to shut off, but don't be tempted to force the battery to a low SOC with the mod.

Evan's faster on the draw than I am tonight.

I have a stretch of my regular commute where I can stealth and glide for a decent stretch. But only if I make sure and get above 35 first and then slip into stealth.

I don't think the EV button improves milage really as the energy in the battery has to come from somewhere. The HSD is pretty clever and seems to know what is best for good fuel economy and reliability.

The OP's situation is one that could benefit from the EV switch, if used properly. In this case, the switch doesn't lead to more battery energy consumption; it forces the ICE to shut off when it's not needed for propulsion.

If it's used properly. If not, it will use more fuel.

After the engine throughly warms up, all it takes is coming to a complete halt for about 5 seconds. I've pulled into parking lots so I could halt and let this last 'transition' even occur. The other approach is to reach 35 mph but this is only good until the next stop. It is best to the full-stop happen.

Ken@Japan reported this critical transition and I'd recommend looking for his reports.

ps. The following shows what can happen if you don't come to a full-stop after warm-up:

In this case, I had to turn around and this led to a full-stop, auto shutdown to go into the last mode. Thereafter, the ICE cycled normally. Obviously, much better performance.

I'd like to thank everyone for answering a question that had been on my mind for some time as well. I've had this to deal with since the streets near my house are 25 mph, and in the morning, when it's warming up, the mileage is hideous. Thing is, sometimes it slips into that mode again as I approach Langley, and I'd prefer to be in stealth while on base.

On several occasions, I was puzzled by the ICE still running when not expected. I found that playing with the AC control to bring the cabin temp closer to the outside temp (i.e. switching AC off) forced the ICE off. When that happened, I confirmed that I could turn ICE on/off at will by changing the desired temp by 0.5 deg. Whether this works probably depends on the SOC. I sometimes resort to this trick when I want to force Prius into Stage 4 before getting on the highway.
