would probably be more helpful to put a voltmeter on the 12v when it is stone cold. is it original?

 

I'm always a little mystified by the various 12 volt readings done through the car's displays. Try measuring with a digital volt meter, with the car off, either at the jump point or directly at the battery posts, after the car's been off for several hours, and post what you get?

If it's still around 11 volts, that's near-dead. A semi-healthy battery would be 12.5 or better (measuring by the above method). 12.6 good. 12.7 or higher really in the pink.

For a better assesment, you want to test both the voltage and the Cold Cranking Amps. There's electronic load testers that can do that. Most automotive retailers selling batteries would have one and could test the battery likely for free. Dealerships too would have these, but more likely to charge you something. You can get a DIY level tester, Solar BA5, BA7 are examples, there's lots of others now.

 

After driving 12v should not be in 11v range. Your 12v bat needs to be changed, not charged.

That's a bit of a rant and/or pet peeve of mine.

First of all, I enjoy writing.

But it seems to me we live in an age with some of the most fantastic tools of communication that have ever existed. And yet, nobody wants to to communicate in anything but short sentences and sound bite length.
I kind of hate that.

I've gotten, not so much in Prius Chat but other forums I participate in, the TLDR response.
And it saddens me. When I look at just at most a few paragraphs, and think..this is 30 seconds of reading..maybe at most a minute or so? And this has become "Too Much" for people to want to absorb?

People use to hone the skill of writing letters back and forth. Letters that often took enormous amounts of time to be conveyed back and forth.
We now live in a time when personal opinion and communication can be instantaneous. But oddly, now we have diminished our attention spans to short sentences and emoji's.
I can't think this is a good thing.

 

i suppose 'chat rooms' aren't the perfect place for tomes, but i have seen a lot of compliments on your writing ability.

I have the same issue. It's funny though, some text, I can read forever, come back for seconds. That Honda Fit feller, for example.

OTOH, BuickGN's tomes have me nodding off: lot's of good info but holy heck they're biblical slabs.The guy seems very knowledgable/smart though, and probably typing at least 60 words per minute.

 

the 12v might need a charge before installing, the car does not make a good charger, more of a maintainer.

go back to the dealer and ask them to test it, or go to an auto parts store, they test for free.

Return to store & exchange it for one that's 12.7 volts from the shelf, have them test it right then and there. Buying a new off the shelf battery that's below 12.7 volt will get you back to square 1 problem. Old battery was lower in voltage in the first place.

Any chance this "doesn't stop" issue occurs upon parking shortly after a large downhill? If so, that's merely the way your Prius gets rid of excessive battery charge.

 

no, the hybrid battery is a couple hundred volts. sounds like your 12v battery is failing under load.
