My prius has been a good care, I replaced the 12v starter battery about 8 months or 30,000 miles back. The problem is that It was running fine, and I put the key into it to start and pushed the start button the dash lights would not turn on, the center council lights and insturments work, but the main dash fuel, speedometer lights are out. I tried to turn off the vehicle and it wont turn off and I can not remove the key from the ignition? Could the start button be defective? Or my starter battery? The car seems to run ok and the main battery bank is fully charged for now, but Its saturday night the dealers are all closed in service until monday If the starter battery goes dead I guess I will have to tow it into the deal any help or suggestions would be appreciated thanks Michael

Toyota issued a recall on the combination meters recently. It sounds like your combination meter is out. The symptoms you describe are appropriate for the problem you are having.

To shut down the car, push and hold the power button for more than three seconds. The Prius should then shut down and turn off.

You need to contact a dealer in your area and your car repaired under the recall. Toyota has been sending out letters for quite some time on this recall.

For more information, refer to the attached file.

    Best of luck to you.

Dorunron is right. Those are the exact same symptoms I got when my combination meter went out. Dealer took care of it at no cost. I got to use a new loaner for 2 weeks.

I have a 2007 prius that had the same issue. No speedometer lights, car wouldn't turn off and key was locked and wouldn't come out. I took it to my dealer in athens and they have just told me that they couldn't get it to do it again but if I wanted to replace the combination meter it would be over $700.

It just started happening to mine now. I'd turn on my 2007 prius and speedometer would turn on. My turning signals are ok but even in the display which shows the battery being charged, the speed won't be displayed there either. Is the extended warranty still effective right now? Since I know it was extended last year.

Is the recall still in effect even though it's been a year??

Please refer to the file in post #2, and you will see that this is an extended warranty, not a recall; and the duration is for 9 years after the vehicle was first placed into service.

i have a 2005 Prius with 124,000 miles. The red triangle began popping up along with the check engine light. After a few hours it would go away and the car would drive fine. I tested the 12v battery and found out it needed to be replaced. Before the 12v battery was replaced the car was fine no icons on dashboard. After the new battery was inserted I turned it on and nothing on the dash lights up. Any suggestions?

The Combination Meter may have hone bad. Combometer is that dispaly that shows: MPH, fuel level, P/D/N/B. If you have symptoms that are identical or very similar to the original post (post #1), then yeah, the combo meter is likely bad.

Post #2 has a copy of the TSB (Toyota Service Bullentin) notice sent out to Gen2 owners about the extended warranty for this part. You should read it for a better understanding. You are likley out of the warranty. The extended warranty was for 9years after the first service date (meaning, from the date the very first owner purchased the vehicle). Assuming your vehicle was purchased in 2005, add 9years, the warranty for your car ended sometime in 2014.

You can always call Toyota Customer Care and see if they will give you a goodwill gesture of a percentage off, or free part but you pay labor at a warranty rate. One of the two situations is the best you can hope for. Highly unlikely Toyota will cover the entire repair.
