    I didn’t know this.
    I have a new 2006 Prius.
This morning I went to the gym and, as usual,
    locked the car.
I came out and went to open the door but the
automatic door opener thingee failed to work.
    Nothing!
As I pondered what I would do I happened to put my
hand in the pants pocket where I keep the electronic key.
I had also put my small radio in that pocket.
I took the radio out, put it in a different pocket and viola,
    the door opened.
I didn’t know that would happen.
    Now I know.

I know there may be a problem with having a cell phone next to the fob, but not a radio. Hmmm, live and learn.

Yeah, I read something to that affect that in the manual. Cell phones and I think even keys (metal objects I think it said-go figure!) can have that effect too, if they're too nearby the fob. Sometimes my doors don't auto unlock for me, so I jumble my keys around in my purse and try again and voile! It works finally.

There was even a TSB out on the very early 04s about Mobil Speed Pass interfering with the fob.

The magnet on the radio speaker distorts the read of the rfid chip?

    something like that I bet...

A block of wood won't cause interferance, but other electronic devices and magnets might..

From the 2006 Manual, Page 25:

In the following cases, the smart function or wireless remote control feature may not operate properly. (If this happens, use a mechanical key to lock or unlock the driver's door and a smart key to start the hybrid system.)

*When facilities issuing strong electromagnetic waves such as TV towers, electric power stations, broadcasting stations are nearby.

*When you are carrying a smart key together with a mobile communications system such as a two-way radio or cellular phone.

*When the smart key is in contact with or covered by a metallic object.

*When another person is operating a wireless remote control function on another vehicle near your vehicle.

    ***
And on the same page, in a yellow "Caution" box:

People with implanted pacemakers or cardiac defibrillators should keep away from the smart entry and start system antennas, because the radio waves may affect the operation of such devices. For the antenna locations, see "ANTENNA LOCATIONS" on page 26.
