2018 Hyundai IONIQ Plug-In Hybrid Priced From $24,950

Wow, that's a fairly impressive price. 29 miles of electric, and 52 mpg. This is definitely a Prius Prime-challenger.

I also love that battery prices continue to fall, so it's slowly closing the gap vs traditional gas cars and non-plug in hybrids. So let's see what happens in by 2020.

2k less than prime plus, will be interesting to see a comparison of features, performance and reliability.
i wonder if all their dealers will be carrying them.

It has the 3rd rear passenger, that make a lot of difference when compared to the Prime.

Chief among them is a 29-mile all-electric driving range, which, when depleted, effectively turns the Ioniq Plug-in into a regular hybrid capable of 52 mpg combined. It has a 119 MPGe estimate, for whatever that's worth. To put all those numbers into perspective, there's the Toyota Prius Prime (25 miles, 54 mpg combined, 133 MPGe), the Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid (48 miles, 42 mpg combined, 110 MPGe), Chevrolet Volt (53 miles, 42 mpg combined, 106 MPGe), and the Ioniq's mechanical sibling, the Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid (26 miles, 46 mpg combined, 105 MPGe).

    Oh, they missed one:
plug-in model EV mi MPG MPGe safety TSS
    1 Prime 25 54 133 Std.
    2 Clarity 48 42 110 Std.
    3 Niro 26 46 105 Std.
    4
    5 Ioniq 29 52 119 Opt. $
    6 BMW i3-REx 97 35 111 Opt. $
    7 Volt 53 42 106 Opt. $

  8. How did they manage to keep the price so low compared to the Prime?

    It’s a Hyundai that’s how

I need to look at the detailed specs at some point though (kwhrs, weights, voltage, etc)

Packages. Toyota has TSS-P as standard equipment. On the Ioniq Hybrid and EV models, that is optional. It's still cheaper than the Prime but the difference isn't as large as it looks once you add the packages in.

    Oh woe is me!

I bought my Prius Prime in December 2016. Not a single Ioniq in sight ... nor Ioniq EV ... nor Ioniq hybrid.

    Oh darn!

Then there is that mandatory requirement, TSS-P. A year late and 100 won short.

oh, after 45 years, i know how the other guy drives. no amount of electronics are gonna save me from him, only defensive driving on my part.
the biggest problem is the guy coming up behind me at 100 mph in the right lane while i'm doing the limit.

Impressive work Hyundai. How did they get the 29 EV miles claim though? From my understanding the car can barely stay in EV mode without the gas engine kicking on. Did they use a more gentle cycle to get to that number? How does 133 MPGe on 8.8 (~6kWh) translate to 25 miles while 119 MPGe on 8.9 (~6kWh too I bet) translate to 29 miles????

I know this isn't fair, but you can get a prime for more than $2k less than MSRP, and if this is going to be anything like the regular Ioniq, these cars will be selling at MSRP for a while.

Most likely uses significantly larger percentage of the battery to get that type of range, which brings into question the type of battery longevity one can expect from the Ioniq Plug-in.

See my comment above, I think the specs are not fully fleshed out to the level they need to be,
For example IONIQS own corporate site says 24 EV miles not 29.
Then right above on a different graphic it says 27 EV miles.

So my guess is once you can actually put the car in your driveway you might find the real numbers are a little different

Personally I am not impressed by this Hyundai attempt to woo away Prius owners. Instead of addressing gas and diesel owners, they are desperate to 'zero-sum' scarf Prius owners.

Hyundai is not trying to grow efficient car ownership by getting gas and diesel owners into their products. The sales numbers suggest poaching Prius owners is failing BUT it may be their only remaining option. They don't see the big picture any more than GM or FCA.

Had Hyundai entered the efficient car market in 2008, they might have had some credibility. But today, it looks like uninspired, copycat with no technical advantage.

Look, I don't want to censor any of the Hyundai efforts because when we compare their products to the Prius family, the advantages too often look like a rounding error. I'm just glad they didn't copy the BMW i3-REx that remains a unique and well qualified plug-in hybrid(*).

    * - It turns out the BMW i3-REx is superior to the Prius Prime when driving in hills.
