    New York Times:

Town Offers Incentives to Owners of Hybrid Cars

Residents of the Town of Huntington who own hybrid or other alternative-fuel vehicles will be eligible for a variety of free parking benefits under a law adopted Tuesday by the town board. They can receive free parking at all town meters, free beach passes and free parking at the town’s four Long Island Rail Road stations beginning Jan. 1.

Stuart Besen, the councilman who sponsored the measure, said Huntington was the first municipality in the state to offer such incentives. He said a goal of the law was to create a demand for such vehicles so that car makers will mass-produce them.

Hybrid vehicles use more than one propulsion system, most commonly gasoline and electricity. They not only take less of a toll on the environment, Mr. Besen said, but also “stop our dependency on foreign oil.â€

“It’s amazing the amount of alternative-fuel vehicles operating today, but they are not being mass-produced,†he said. “The hybrid is the most popular, but I wouldn’t be surprised if in 10 to 15 years we see all types of alternative-fuel vehicles.â€

The savings offered by the law are only symbolic, Mr. Besen said, and are “not going to save someone a lot of money.†Meters are 25 cents an hour and the railroad and beach passes total $55 annually, he said.

D'oh! I visit Huntington regularly, but I'm not a resident. Oh, well.

I wont be able to take advantage of this new adopted law, I'm in the area for business very often but I do not reside in the town of Huntington; hoppefully other local towns will adhere to the same guidelines. ;)

The article says residents are eligible, but are you sure it is ONLY for residents?

Salt Lake City offers free parking for hybrid cars and even though I don't live in that city, I applied for the permit and got one. I needed to show my registration and driver's license which both show I live in a different city in Utah, but apparently it didn't matter.

I don't know that Huntington does it the same way, but maybe?
