Competition is nice...where there is no real data and reliability on Hybrid From Hyundai....
So if we really focus on all aspects ......it will take 3-4 generation to catch up with Toyota...

Exactly...and I see many Sonata Hybrids around.

Frankly, I'm not quite sure what SAMPROCAT has against Hyundai...but from other posts it is very clear that he really doesn't like them...

i suppose we just get tired of so called competitors mentioning prius in every other sentence of their marketing hype.
if your car is good, won't it stand on it's own? i guess it's a compliment, but it's been over a decade of tiresomeness.
we've heard it too many times from too many manufacturers, and the people here who desire to buy into it due to their dissatisfaction with toyota for whatever reason, before it has been proven. defensiveness on both sides i suppose.

 

The fact of the matter is that Hyundai is giving Toyota some major competition...regardless of your personal feelings on the matter. And because of this there will be discussions about it here on PriusChat. Frankly, this appears to be the first time in recent memory that a manufacturer has given Toyota a run for it's money on price and MPG ( the EPA agrees ).

Look, I love the Prius just as much as the next guy...heck, we own one. However, many of us certainly are interested in potential alternatives and the different technologies that are implemented. Constant bashing of a particular competitor, especially when discussed on the 'other cars' sub-forum, with no data to back anything up, is just silly.

I certainly agree that more 'real world' data is needed on the Ioniq. Frankly, the lack of data seems to be what is causing much of the contention here on the board. I hope that once we get that data we can put to rest who is 'better'. However, 'better' is obviously a loaded question...and since the technologies are two completely different beasts, I'm sure that the debate will never be fully put to rest.

And thanks much for the personal attack...Apparently I "don't understand cars"...

 

actually, they are not. perhaps they will be.

Many need to learn not to conflate third party sources as one manufacturer calling out another.

 

They have a more thorough review now. 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Review – First Drive

Interesting that the estimated efficiency is higher in the Hyundai, but they note that the gas engine comes on more easily due to an electric motor that's considerably less powerful than the Prius. It makes me wonder if real world mileage will be affected, especially in the plug in model as people find themselves accidentally starting the ICE. But it does look like a very good first try.

 

"Incidentally, the Ioniq Plug-in and regular hybrids uniquely ditch the old-school 12-volt lead acid battery in favor of a 12-volt li-ion unit merged with the propulsion battery.

This battery can be “jump started” if needed by a push of a button to take energy from the larger propulsion battery, and is covered under its lifetime warranty."

Two people I know sold their Sonata hybrids because the real world mpg was horrible and even close to what's advertised. Maybe the latest is improved. Hyundai sells a lot of cars but the reliability is not on par with Toyota yet.

 

Not many can compare well with Toyota for reliability. We have a friend who has another hybrid. I think it's a Sonata, IIRC. She said she likes it except for hardly having any trunk space. That would be a show stopper right there for me.

 

You're obviously a Hyundai zealot. Please buy the car and be our guinea pig for Hyundai reliability.

Sam is right, it took Toyota a decade to build up a large fan base for their Prius model series. It will take Hyundai a similar length of time to prove that the Ioniq is good for the consumer.

In the meantime Hyundai may eat into Toyota's sales. Or people will learn to dislike the Ioniq.

What was she expecting? Truth in advertising right there on the trunk lid, "So not a Hybrid". Plain as day!

 

The second gen supposedly improved upon reaching the numbers.

That is a complaint for nearly all the mid-size sedan hybrids.

 

I didn't know that, but I'm not surprised.

Uhh..no I'm not. I'm a huge fan of our Prius. We do own a couple non-hybrid Hyundai's though.

Frankly, I'm ok with a non-hybrid Hyundai...but I have exactly the same concerns as the rest of you about potential reliability problems that the Ioniq may face. I'll probably end up with a Prime at some point but I certainly do find the Ioniq extremely interesting. If I do ever obtain an Ioniq it will have to be after a LOT more data comes in about MPG and reliability.

As I said before...we *are* in the "other cars" forum...I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. Can we not discuss Hyundai without people freaking out?? I don't get it.
