HYBRID SALES WILL SOAR 268%, SAYS J.D. POWER

U.S. hybrid-electric vehicle sales volumes are anticipated to grow by 268% between 2005 and 2012, according to the most recent update of the J.D. Power and Associates Automotive Forecasting Services Hybrid-Electric Vehicle Outlook.

Hybrid vehicle sales are expected to grow from approximately 212,000 vehicles in 2005 to 780,000 by 2012. Despite the large increase in sales volume, vehicle models utilizing a hybrid-electric powertrain still will remain a small portion of the market, growing from 1.3% of U.S. light- vehicle sales in 2005 to 4.2% market share by 2012.

imo J.D. Powers is underestimating the future sales of hybrids.
1 - A lot will depend on the price of gas; if it keeps going up, the interest in hybrids will rise exponentially.
2 - If automakers produce hybrids that are as fuel efficient as the Prius, proportional to the market segment (pick-ups, vans, suvs) instead of just using the technology to boost power and only yield a 10% mpg gain, then interest will rise exponentially.
3 - Lastly, let's not forget many of us baby-boomers who grew up with Mother Earth News and still want to live an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. I, for one, am so sick of the greedy corporate bigwigs that are now in control of our government, that I will go out of my way to "stick it to the man". Yeah, I know, it ain't much of a poke for me to buy a prius - but multiply that by the millions like me who are getting just as fed up.......

    Is this just wishful thinking?
