HV Battery overcharge?

    Hi!

    Sometimes the charging of the HV battery will not stop at about 45MPH and more. The Battery symbol os going to 100% and the fuel consumption stays significant over what it normal takes at this speed. When i switch to neutral and back to drive again, the consumption dropps to half and the battery startes to dischartge until it reaches 80%. After this procedure everything is working normal. Is the anybody who noticed the same thing?
    Could this be a fault which can leads to overcharge and damage of the HC battery?

    No. The battery will take care of itself. You can't hurt it, short of driving without gasoline, and even then you have to work at it.

    100% on the MFD is really 80% HV battery charged
    and it wil never go past 80%
    so dont wurry

    We saw 84% or more than 80% on CAN messages many times, but it never go to 100%.

    Are you descending a hill and pushing the brakes? If so, thats regenerative braking thats charging the battery.

    Thank you for your answers!

    Of course the system will take care of the battery, but why sometimes the system will not stop charging on continous highway speeds. I allso know about the 20% to 80% charging window. i allso agree with "filling up the battery with regenerative energy while going down a hill, but on flat roads, where the power should come fron the ICE? The most time in this cases the SOC stopps at 80%. After that point the arrows in the disply are changing from charge to disc´harge every three secons or so. I think i will order a scangouge to take a closer look on the real SOC. Allso the fact, that the consumption stays higher (which is cleare for me, when energy is going into the battery) looks not like the behavior which was described in the manual or from other users. and at least, when i force to neutral and back again to drive, the car is switching off the ICE at speeds at about 45 to 50 and powering whith battery for a minute or two looks like a "very full" charged battery. In 99 % the behavior is ending at 80% on highway.

    This is pretty typical of cold weather to see a higher average SOC as the ICE tends to run more to warm itself up esp. when you're running the heat...it spills excess 'juice' into the battery.

    Mike, when the battery symbol on the screen is all green and you come to a stop, the ICE may cycle on and off. You may wonder, "Why is my engine running when the battery is full?" It is the battery computer telling the electric motors to spin the engine, without fuel or spark, to waste the excess electrical charge.

    Since the engine and exhaust system must be hot to have low emissions, in the winter the engine will run for this reason alone.

    but i have read here a post that says 80% is max
    so that must not correct
    anyway bottom line is that it Will never go to 100% and when the MFD says all green it not meaning 100% full

    thats what the TS needed to now

    I believe the car works very hard to prevent you from hitting 80%, but b/c of the hysteresis and delays in the system for monitoring the exact SOC when a heavy charge is applied (heavy regen braking going down a steep hill for instance) you can, very briefly, exceed that 80% mark. I too have seen 83% a handful of times, but it never stayed there for more than a few minutes.
    Likewise the 40% lower limit has been breached...but that's even harder to do and I've never, personally, seen anything less than about 42%.

    Without a tool to view the CAN messages, you can't really tell whether the battery is charging or not. The arrows on the Consumption screen show the flow of electricity, but not the magnitude or duration. A small quick blip going to the battery looks just the same as a big slug of charge. Under normal driving conditions with the ICE running, part of the energy is delivered mechanically to the drive wheels and part is delivered by electricity from the ICE through the MGs. Small bits of charge go into and out of the battery while this is happening, even without major recharging. It's completely normal to see the arrows go back and forth from the battery.

    And to answer the other question, the Scangauge II does work on the 2007 and 2008 car.
