I purchased an '06 and it will be here in about 2 weeks. I have been reading the posts and find most of my questions to be answered except for what is the real HP of the Prius? My dealer said it was about 140 while the article I read said it was 110. Can someone here explain to me what the real HP is? I did try to search this but came up with an error. I'm lucky to find a site with so much knowledge about a vehical and people who really care. Thanks.
Prius' peak horsepower is 110. Because of the Hybrid Synergy Drive equiped with e-CVT, Prius can reach it's max hp in most of the situation and quicker than any mechanical transmission in production. This makes Prius perform like a 150 hp traditional car. Mechanical transmission cars are handicapped by either due to delay in shifting or requirement for the engine to rev to accelerate. For 30-50 mph acceleration, Prius is one second faster than 2.4l automatic Camry (last gen). Dennis
Thanks Dennis. That's just what I was looking for. I was a tad concerned that there would not be enough power but sounds as though there is plenty.

Truth is MG2 (Motor Generator 2 check out http://priuschat.com/Acronyms-and-Abbrevia...ry-t13051.html) may peak out a bit higher that that momentairly. This is not sustained HP. It is a very brief kick, nothing more.
Peak horsepower is 110. The ICE does about 76. If you total the horsepower of the ICE and the motors, you get the 140 the dealer was speaking of, but it doesn't work that way. Because of the physics of the PSD, at peak horsepower, some of the power from the ICE goes through MG1 and MG2, so they don't add together without interaction. Remember, of course, that the ICE is the only source of sustained power, so at the end of the day, the Prius is a 76 horsepower automobile that stores away surplus power to use when needed. Tom
