How to trun off the beep when in reverse?

    Is there a simple to turn off that annoying beeping when the car is in reverse?

    to turn off reverse beep:

    Power on (not necessarily ready, IG-ON will do).
    Set Trip/ODO to ODO
    Power off.
    Power on to ready (brake on).
    Within 6 seconds, press and hold ODO for 10 seconds or more.
    WHILE STILL HOLDING ODO *after* 10 seconds, Shift from P to R, then back to P. Now release ODO.
    You'll see in the trip display "b on" or "b off".
    Press ODO to toggle.
    Now power off.

    enjoy the silence! :wink:

    Problem. Tried to turn off the Backup Beep today. It did not work. This Prius is a 2005 and the gear shift does not go to P, only R N and D

    Is there a similar set of directions for the Prius 2005 or is there something different I need to do since I cannot "shipt" into P, but need to press the P button.

    Please advise.

    The 2004 and 2005 Prius both have the same shift lever and P button. So just use the P button when it says Shift into P, and use the Shift lever to R when it says Shift into R.

    The point is to perform the activity for which you wish to turn beeping on or off. If you try the seatbelt beeper procedure, you will see it is similar but you are fastening and unfastening the seat belt instead of shifting.

    The only problem with the seatbelt reminder is that it can't be turned off in the newer cars. The display toggles between b-off and b-on, but it doesn't change anything, the seatbelt beeper still beeps. Thankfully the reverse beeper can be disabled (and has been).

    Speaking of the secret Federation Prius Manual, there was an article in this months Car and Driver about the Prius running at Bonneville. It was pretty interesting, but what really intrigued me was how the driver was able to turn off the traction control. Apparently there are methods to turn on and off features in discrete ways. For the traction control, it was a combination of pressing on the brake once, and the accelerator three times. The article didn't go into details, but I would assume that it would be in IG-ON mode and might require something like the ODO button being pressed.

    Anyone else heard of these codes, and better yet, anyone know any of them?

    OK, here's some informationn from the repair manual. However, it does state that spinning the front wheels can damage the vehicle (see part I bolded). Do this at your own risk.
    This will disable the TRAC and keep the engine running.

    5. INSPECTION MODE
    HINT:
     The PRIUS’ engine automatically stops if the vehicle is stopped, the engine is warmed up, the battery
    is well charged, and A/C compressor operation is not being used. Activate inspection mode when continuous
    operation of the engine is required.
     The PRIUS has a motor TRAC function. When the wheel speed of the front wheels exceeds that of
    rear wheels, the wheel speed of the front wheels is restrained. It is necessary to activate inspection
    mode and deactivate the motor TRAC function when turning only the front wheels using a speedometer
    tester.
    (a) Vehicle conditions
    (1) Before activating inspection mode, turn the air conditioning off, start the engine with the selector
    lever in the P position, and check that the engine stops within several seconds after starting (engine
    warm up check).
    (2) Activate inspection mode and inspect the vehicle. The shift position for each test is as follows:
    Test item Shift position Inspection mode
    1. Vehicle straight travelling test
    (side slip inspection)
    D ON or OFF
    2. Breaking force test N ON or OFF
    3. Speed meter test D ON
    4. Exhaust gas test (idling) P ON
    5. Headlight test P ON or OFF
    (3) Reset inspection mode immediately after completion of inspection.
    NOTICE:
    Driving the vehicle without resetting inspection mode may damage the transaxle.
    (B) Special notes for speedometer test
    NOTICE:
    Do not use the speedmeter tester to perform rapid starting or quick accleration/deceleration without
    first setting the proper load on the vehicle. Failing to set the load may damage the transaxle.
    (1) Depress the accelerator pedal slowly and gradually accelerate the vehicle. Make a measurement.
    (2) After the measurement, use the brake to gradually decelerate the vehicle.
    © Special note for using the chassis dynamometer
    Always set an appropriate load before starting the test.
    (d) Activating of inspection mode (NOT Using the hand–held tester)
    Perform the following steps from (1) through (4) in 60 seconds.
    (1) Turn the power switch ON (IG).
    (2) Fully depress the accelerator pedal twice with the
    transmission in the P position.
    (3) Fully depress the accelerator pedal twice with the
    transmission in the N position.
    (4) Fully depress the accelerator pedal twice with the
    transmission in the P position.
    (5) Check that the HV system warning lamp flashes on
    the multi–information display.
    (6) Start the engine by pushing the power switch, depressing
    the brake pedal.

    NOTICE:
     The idling speed in inspection mode is approximately
    1,000 rpm. The engine speed increases to 1,500 rpm
    if the accelerator pedal is depressed by less than
    60%. If the accelerator pedal is depressed by more
    than 60%, the engine speed increases to 2,500 rpm.
     If a DTC is set during inspection mode, the master
    warning lamp and the error warning lamp illuminate
    on the multi–information display.
     When the master warning lamp illuminates during inspection
    mode, deactivate inspection mode, and
    check a DTC(s).
     Driving the vehicle without deactivating inspection
    mode may damage the transaxle.

    Happy ending. The beep for reverse is now silent. :)
    Now if the seat belt beep would only turn off. Was not able to get that one to turn off on the 2005 Prius.

    I just turned off my seat belt beep on my 2005 using the same directions as the reverse beep except instead of P-R-P you buckle-unbuckle, that should get you b-on at which time you can toggle it to b-off using the ODO button.

    Thanks for your post. For your contribution, I have donated all my points to you. I agree that it wouldn't be a good idea to run the car in the inspection mode. I was hoping that maybe pushing on the brake twice, pushing on the gas twice, and holding ODO in for 10 seconds might just turn off the screen beep. :)

    BTW, I'm still loving the upside down rearview mirror! Thanks again for that suggestion.

    I found this buried in the '04 Repair Manual, but updated the steps to be a bit more laymen since the draft release RM I downloaded was a bit hard to understand.

    Steps.

    1. Power on the car to IG-ON or READY. IG-ON will do for this purpose.
    2. Using the Trip/ODO button, set the Trip/ODO display to ODO (not Trip A or Trip B)
    3. Power off the car.
    4. Now power the car to READY (brake on). This is required so that step 6 works correctly.
    5. Within 6 seconds of powering on, press and hold the Trip/ODO button for 10 seconds or more.
    6. WHILE STILL HOLDING ODO *after* the 10 seconds, shift the "gear" selector from P to R, then back to P. Now release the Trip/ODO button.
    7. If the last step was successful, "b on" or "b off" should be displayed in the location where the Trip Odometer or Odometer is normally displayed. "b on" is beep on, and "b off" is beep off.
    8. Press Trip/ODO to toggle the mode.
    9. Now power the car off to exit the toggle mode.
    10. Power the car on to READY and confirm the reverse beep status by shifting to R. The beep should not be audible if "b off" was selected, and should be audible if "b on" was selected..

    The Repair manual page states that if the the 12v battery is disconnected, the beep will reset to the default of on, and this procedure will need to be performed again. The repair manual also isn't clear that Trip/ODO should remain depressed while shifting.

    The driver and passenger seatbelt reminder chime can be disabled or enabled (respectively, defaults appear to be driver on and passenger off) using similar steps. Instead of shifting from P to R to P in step 6, simply buckle then unbuckle the appropriate seatbelt while continuing to depress the Trip/ODO button.
