these full page google ads are very annoying as they cover up the whole screen in a semi-transparant background.

Yes, they are on this site. I am using IE.
The ad occasionally pops up when you look at a post.
It is not a pop-up, its some kind of overlay within the browser window.

A few months ago someone else had a similar problem, I think it was Jack? Anyway he found out it was something he had picked up from another site that was showing up here. Have you tried clearing all the past stuff, history, cookies, and cache from your browser?

    Duh.

    Try Firefox.

I use Mozilla (same people, almost same thing) and the browser blocks popups. I set the allowances. I also get tabbed browsing which I'll never give up.

IE has to be one of the worst browsers there is. Except maybe my parent's AOL piece of whatever garbage it is.

IE is the best example of just-because-a-lot-of-people-use-it-doesn't-make-it-the-best."

    (Just think: virus=Windows+IE)

BTW I'm on a MAC and I think Safari sucks too. But at least you don't get pop-ups in that either.

And not just on this site but on the entire internet!

Download the new Internet Explorer 7 Beta version. It works very well and has tabbed browsing and a bunch of other new features.

    sanguis,

It looks like that's some sort of spyware/adware that found it's way onto your computer. I certainly haven't had problems like that. Try running Adaware and that will probably fix it. :p

Internet Explorer hasn't supported MACs since version 5.

I'll stick with Mozilla. Even when IE was available for the MAC I used Netscape. It was better then. Mozilla/Firefox is better now.

And I still recommend Firefox. It's available for the PC.

Windows + IE = extreme security vulnerability.

Microsoft publicly announced they will never again support IE on Mac. No new versions or fixes. It was around the time Apple made thier own browser "Safari".

Isn't that what I said? Version 5 was the last one. It was about 4-5 years ago.

And Safari is stupid. MACs are known for their one button mice, yet to open a new window or use tabbed browsing in Safari you either have to use a two button mouse or you have to use a key/mouse combination. How stupid is that?

That's why I use Mozilla. It's no slower than Safari. At least I can import and organize my bookmarks easier. Safari is a major pain. (And the earlier versions would "eat" the bookmarks from your other browsers!)

Get SpyBot Search and Destroy, too. I run them both and they often find different things.

Oh, yeah? What does the "Windows Validation" plug-in do? Sounds like more spyware to me...

Microsoft bought an antispyware program (I forget wich one) and turned it into a product. It's currently available for free as a Beta. I've been using it succesfully for a long time so it's solid. It downloads updated to it's librabry of spyware automatically from Microsoft and stops spyware from even installing. It doesn't seem to confict with my other spyware removal tools or anti virus. It's not perfect but I only seem to find 1-2 spyware with the other programs iI run. Too me it's the easiest to use free program and while I like adaware you have to pay to get it to do the same as the microsoft one does.

I don't think it reports anything back to Microsoft but then again what I have on my machine is legal so I'm not overly concerned.

BTW, "Windows Genuine Advantage" is Microsoft's version of spyware... <_<

I know it can be turned off in IE, but I'm not sure yet how to turn it off in Firefox.

I think I'll stick with AdAware and SpyBot, thank you.
