After 7 years I finally had to replace my original OEM 12v battery yesterday in my January build 2013 Prius. I replaced it with $237.99 Optima 46B24R and seems to be working fine.
How long do the typical OEM 12v Prius batteries last these days? A0DB84DA-2740-4DBC-AA5E-52C0D75EB51D.jpeg 809D77AD-C339-4037-BE26-06028FED39C2.jpeg 413FE837-EBBE-4740-8044-A29666AFE1F1.jpeg

unfortunately, there's no typical. it depends on too many factors and variables.

mine lasted 7 1/2 years, and i replaced it with a $200. oem.

i think you did very well for florida heat.

This brings me to my question. I have a Gen 4 2017 Prius. I have a 4v charger/reconditioner. I was wondering if I should run my battery on my power conditioner for an hour or two to extend the battery life once a year. Does the internal alternator and charging gear do all this by itself making power reconditioning unnecessary?

Thanks for the reply... Wow! I guess I should’ve priced the OEM 12v from Toyota. I might replace the 12v in my Model 3 Performance with the OEM Prius battery!

    That’s a great question!
i’m not sure about the pricing but I know people have been having issues with them within the first two years. Replacing it would be more for peace of mind because just like a Prius you’re dead in the water when the 12v battery dies in a Tesla

The OEM battery had a note on it stating not to charge above 4.5 A I don’t know if the car needs to be running to get maintained (I would imagine so) as that process would require more power bleed off from the HV battery... I believe Tesla does the same thing which is why they always recommend to have your car plugged in even when not charging (just to float the 12 V battery)

That looks perfect! I use my RC charger that I had for drone batteries. I guess the best solution would be to have a new battery ready and waiting (floating) at the five or 6 year mark so you don’t get stranded if it’s your only vehicle. I think this app I have for the OBD port shows the 12 V battery level somewhere but it’s not on this screen... I’ll check again later ED1AA36A-D7CB-4CD2-B57E-742D5523244D.jpeg

It's a 4amp charger reconditioner. It has a built in volt meter and does everything automatically. If you have a bad battery, after trying to charge it for a couple hours. It will tell you if your battery is good or bad. Basically, this is the little brother of the fast charge 10 amp charger. It's just a bit slower charging up the battery.

In my case, the dealer told me my battery was still good but to keep an eye on it.

I know what it is... You had typed "I have a 4v charger/reconditioner"
I kinda figured you meant 4A, not 4v.

One or two hours per year likely won't do anywhere near enough. Consider instead running it, or a true battery tender-maintainer, overnight every few months.

I don't know about Gen4, but earlier Prii generations are quite slow at getting the 12V battery up to full charge. Units that experience only short trips, or often sit unused for extended periods, are likely to be perpetually undercharged.

It is a true battery maintainer. Read the item description at harbor freight. It works great.

My 2012 Model 4, purchased new in September 2012 (so I suspect was built the previous summer) still has original 12V battery and shows zero signs of needing to be replaced any time soon.

I have thought about this recently, and for those that used an OEM, did you just do a core exchange at your local Toyota dealership?

Just changed mine out a couple of weeks ago. 2012 purchased new in May 2012. Replaced it with Toyota OEM.

I chickened out at 7.5 years when I replaced my 12V battery. It was still running fine with no noticeable dimming of headlights after the car was shut off.

So I have no idea how long it would’ve lasted.
