I am hoping 10 - 15 years, but I have a habit of getting rid of cars after about 3 years. Ask me again this winter.

I shifted to being a long term car owner in the 70's. I traded my 2004 Prius (288k miles) for my new 2016 this month and our son is still driving our 1996 Subaru Outback, and my wife's new Subaru Crosstrek replaced a 2001 Jetta. I expect that my bright red 2016 Prius may be my last car as it should still be running as I get into my late 80's (about 15 years from now).

I tend to keep my main driver around 10 years.
When I bought my 2016 Prius, I thought of trading in my 2007 (bought in 2006), but decided to keep it for now.

I do believe safety technologies in vehicles will be advancing, as such, I may trade up before the 10 year mark if I find the features to be desirable.

TOYOTA puts a 3 yr warranty on it, which for the past few cars has been the trigger to change - though might keep it a little longer than that.

But, the question is, what will be around in 3-4 yrs time? I'm suspecting that the technology acceleration which has started will become a stampede by then, making things like Lane Assist and DRCC look pretty ordinary. There is talk of (AUDI, today in the news) Cruise Control synchronised to traffic light changes. Autonomous vehicles which (Tesla, Merc, Volvo, AUDI, BMW et al) are in Stage 2 BETA mode today will be up another stage or 2 by then, I would imagine that Governments worldwide will have settled on some sort of semi-standardised legislation to allow them. Indeed Governments will, as soon as they possibly can, encourage and even mandate autonomous (or semi-autonomous) vehicles, as they even now see them as the answer to traffic congestion.

There also could be mandated EV or Zero Emissions vehicles in certain cities, municipalities - or even countries.

Which all will have 2 effects - there will be a desirability for the new tech, but today's cars will possibly devalue quicker because of the new tech.

So, for me, if there is a watershed not far beyond 3-4 yrs would look like BIG changes, I might wait a little longer.

15 years or so. I know there are always new advances and they are coming quick and I know I could always sell it but I try to temper my consumerism in some way.

I plan to put at least 200k on it and I drive around 25,000 a year so ~8 years? Might need to upgrade someday to something larger for towing but would likely just give it to the girlfriend then.

Certainly plan to stick with a Toyota forever.

I am so done buying cars! :)

Technology changes are very interesting, but I don't mind them passing me by. I prefer to be frugal in retirement, and (hopefully) not have to spend money on any more cars. I like keeping life simple, and owning a simple-to-operate vehicle. My current 2016 Prius has all the "technology" I could ever use or want!

This may sound dumb, but truthfully the only "convenience" features I desire in a car, are an automatic transmission, a good air conditioner, and a radio. That's it. And if it gets good gas mileage, that's just frosting on the cake.

I tend to keep cars I like a long time. And now that I'm retired, I don't look forward to coming up with that wad of cash more than one more time in my lifetime. I'm thinking no fewer than 150k miles. That should be about ten to fourteen years. Hopefully I can get one more new car and enjoy it before I croak.

Well I tend to keep my car to around 200k or so and trade it in for something new at that time (8-9 years). Had 333k on my last toyota (matrix)

I had my 2006 gen 2, 200K, until 3 months ago. I kept it that long because other than oil, wiper blades and filters, It went 200 K with 0 dollars spent on repairs. From all indications my 2016 is the same quality. I think I will keep it until the technology makes a driverless Prius available.

200k? THIS is why I bought a Prius. That and it's cool. Good mileage is gravy as far as I was thinking.

Yeah I caught myself eyeing the new Ford GT......yeah right I wish! But I am looking at moving away from CO and if I do I'll probably get rid of many of my toys then just buy something like a Power Wagon, which may or may not end up replacing the Prius. Talk about a 180* turn....

It'll probably be a self-driving Prius for me next.

I always thought of myself as a driver. I love jumping in a car or on a bike and just going. I have a lot of fun with it and I never thought I'd like a self driving car. Then I got this Prius with the radar cruise..... I absolutely love it and now I'm looking forward to the day I can kick my feet up, read the paper and sip coffee while commuting.

yeah, all the tech improvements will probably cause me to upgrade my car, even if its to up to date prius, I kinda wish I ponied up for the 3 with the safety tech like auto emergency braking, and DRCC , they sound really good to have as extra insurance

IMO; the auto braking isn't really extra insurance because it's not really accident avoidance technology. It's more like liability transfer technology. The system beeps and flashes "BRAKE" on the screen. While it's doing this it cuts power and seems to charge up the brakes. When you wake up and stomp on the brakes they really grab, causing the guy behind you to rearend you. But in most states, that's his fault.

I plan to hang on to my Prius maybe 3 - 5 years or so. If anything, I may trade it up for a newer Prius for just the heck of it. It's not smart, I know, but I'm a new-freak. I'm in love with my Prius, so it's hard to say or predict.
