Any idea how the map/nav system gets updated? My old Prius you just bought a new DVD every year.

The new system requires you to leave the car at the dealer and they'll update it for you with their special USB dongle. It is different from older cars where you just order the disc and swap it.

Probably best to have it done while your car is in for service.

Does anyone if they charge for that service (especially in the States)?

That I'm not sure. In theory, accessory prices include installation where required.

So my map version is May 2015. I'm guessing there's an update but any way to tell the most current version?

You have to take it to the Toyota dealer to get navigation updated. New maps come out in late November.

WOW! That's crazy. It should be included as part of the warranty!

Not that I'm that worried about it. But that's nuts.

There MUST be a hackable solution.

people used to buy and sell the discks for cheap. i don't know how they'll hack the flash. that's why so many use their phones or portable. still, the old maps work for 99% of the roads.

The only problem I see with that solution is that it only mirrors the phone. You have to touch the phone to control it, and that's a ticketable offense in Illinois. As long as you control it from the head unit you are legal, but if your hand touches the phone they can ticket you.

Wait, they have to update over USB even with removable map SD cards?

Ok that part I'm not sure lol. The 2012-2015 (non-HDD models) used USB.

Good point. Maybe with the SD cards, it's back to a simple swap.

I would bet it is back to simple swap. I saw somebody got a 16Gb card and just moved the files from old to the new card. So if one was to get a hold of those updated files

Yes, maps are updated via the Micro SD Card (behind lower cover near the screen). Page 261 of the Navigation manual.

It also says "Do not edit or delete the map data on the SD card, as doing so may deactivate the navigation system."

Page 260 says "Map updates available for a fee. Contact your Toyota dealer for further information."

Prefer free and not fee. They should update these while under warranty for free.

While I agree, and would prefer not pay any fee for map updates (consider how with phone apps, maps are always up to date) - a Warranty is in no way related to maps. That is, the purpose of a warranty is to correct a failure that is the result of a defect in workmanship or manufacture. Apples and oranges.

It would be interesting if Toyota offered an "update service" where all such updates were included on an annual basis for lifetime (such as Garmin started to do some time ago...)

on the Gen 3 it was expensive. You could buy a very good aftermarket nav for the price of the update.

My 2016 Prius came with 2015 June maps. Completely useless for NZ ; my first trip to Auckland the maps took me on a wild goose chase three times! Seems crazy buying a new car with old maps and having to use Google Maps on the phone.
