The 2008 owner's manual say I could have HID or Halogen bulbs. How do I tell which I have without taking them out and inspecting them. Also why would you put $400.00 bulbs in a car unless you wanted to screw the customer. The more I learn about the Prius the more confused i get on why they did certain things.
HID=High Intensity Discharge. Later technology than halogen and brighter. It also takes more than just a 'bulb' to make HID work, so it's not surprising it's a more expensive extra. This isn't just a Prius (or a Toyota) thing, it's pretty much every mfr (but not necessarily on low end models). For example, Ford sells them on the Mustang for US$525.
Chuck, If you have the Standard Prius package #2, then you have the Halogens. If you have the Touring Prius package #2, then you have the HIDs. Another and simpler way of knowing is: If you don't have front fog lights, then you have the Halogens. If you have front fog lights, then you have the HIDs.
