How bad was the election for Republicans?

It was so bad that now they just want to get along, and counsel tolerance.

 

It was not bad for Republicans.

It was bad for this sanctimonious, old-money, treasonous bunch of old-style, old-boy Southern Democrats, masquerading as Republicans.

The Republicans I know are appalled by the crazy spending, combined with misdirected tax-cuts (to the oil industry, instead of, say, payroll?!) Or by the crazy Drug boondoggle, which makes the CA electric industry "deregulation" scheme seem intelligent. Someone missed Economics 101....

The Republicans I know are for limiting government meddling in our private lives, not for regulating who people sleep with, or marry. Or ascribing "personhood" to a couple of cells....

The Republicans I know were with James Baker and Norman Schwarzkopf, in shouting in the wind that the war in Iraq was against American interests....

I can go on and on....

There is a lot of truth in what you write, but you left out a couple of bedfellows: NeoCons, corporations, and Evangelicals.

It bought them 15 years in power, and now they are paying the price. The repub party of today is not the party of Barry Goldwater, let alone the party of Abraham Lincoln.

The theme to "Archy Bunker" is running through my head right now.

 

I won't nail myself to the republican party, I tend to vote/support ideology which typically would be aligned with the Republican candidates. Abortion and Gay Marriage are two of my top deal breakers.

And, this election doesn't hit me that hard. I do see other conservatives acting as if the sky has fallen.

The 5 year view of this through the 2008 presidential cycle looks more encouraging now than if the repubs would have held the chambers.

For the next two years, it's for the dems to disgust the voters. I don't see any way they can be successful at anything given the lay of the land. If they ran a super tight ship, they might have a great two years and build toward 2008, but I am counting on them not doing that. They are like a pitbull just got off the chain for the first time in 12 years. They're gonna ravage the Bush admin for two years and find out at election time, the public is just so sick of them. Cool...

I was talking it over with people in the office today after Rummy quit. How cool would it be if Bush and Cheney pull the troops out of Iraq in the next week... Drop everything on the ground right where you are standing and just fly home...

Then, Bush/Cheney line up, tell america... here's your troops home... just what you asked for... You're all screwed within a year, I've been telling you that for the last 3 years and now finally to wrap it up, I Quit... and... I Quit....

Dennis Hastert as commander in chief for the next two years... Bush, Cheney and Rummy catching fish in Jackson Hole Wyoming in early april. When Pelosi calls for a hearing, they all 3 flip her the bird and toss in the line for another fish.

I don't think downfall of America is the outcome. I do think we get a whopper of a whoopin from the ideologies who live to destroy us if we let off the war on terror. I do think there is such a whollop to America possible that financial systems collapse, infrastructures (communications, electric, water) collapse, governments end up in emergency mode... If we do all the right things that allow our enemies to mount the attack on us here. We could let them have scholarships to our top nuclear physics masters programs and how about admission to our best flight schools for a few years... What could it hurt?

Bush is a better man than most. At some point, you just say screw it, and walk away.
