I pulled the homelink mirror off my totaled 2007 Prius and have now bought a 2010 Prius III with the solar roof package. I would like to put the homelink mirror on my 2010. Does anyone know if the wiring is already up there or would I have to do all the wiring?

    I have the same question:
I just bought a '10 Prius III with Solar / Sun roof.
I'd like to buy a Homelink / dimmer rearview mirror from eBay and replace the stock (no feature) mirror.
Is the wiring up there to support it? I figure it just needs 12v DC.

I also wanted to know, I have 2010 Prius III with Navi no sun roof, is it possible to upgrade my ordinary rear mirror with "Home-link auto dimming" one!

I remember reading a thread that said the plug in is up there. I'll try and find it.

I had it upgraded when I bought mine in March. The plug in is there.

I had my standard mirror replaced with a Homelink Mirror with Compass several weeks ago on my 2010 Trim III.

First, wiring. The "plug" which goes into the mirror itself is not there in the Trim III. The wiring is there to connect the mirror's wiring and plug to, but you have to supply the plug.

You will want to get a "pig-tail" -- the plug plus at least a few inches of wire -- to fit the mirror you're going to have installed. If you're buying the mirror new, confirm that it includes the pig-tail. If not, you can buy an adapter which has the plug and wires to fit many different mirror options. Mirrors I've seen on eBay vary as to whether the pig-tail is there, so nail the seller down on it if you're thinking of buying.

With the pig-tail, a tech can connect it to the wiring which is available in the car (unless you opt for something like a mirror with a back-up feature, in which case a lot more custom wiring is needed).

In my case, I had bought a mirror on eBay from a Toyota Avalon and had it installed in my Gen II because I wanted a compass on the Homelink mirror. The car had come with the base Homelink mirror, so the wiring and plug were there.

I kept that mirror (swapped the standard Gen II mirror back into that car) and had the mirror with compass installed in my 2010. I did not have the pig-tail as it was still needed to restore the Gen II to having its standard Homelink mirror.

So, I bought an aftermarket wiring kit which could be wired to any of the variations of mirror features, including mine.

I had an aftermarket shop install it, and it wasn't a lengthy process.

That thread does not address this issue - it starts out on-track, then looses focus. It deals in general with many different years and models, mirror placements. But all cars with no sunroof.

I'd like to know what it takes to put a homelink / auto-dimming mirror in a '10 sunroof equipped car. My guess is it isn't as easy (by a long shot) as putting this mirror in a non-sunroof equipped car.

I just bought a 2010 Prius II with a solar package this week. I asked the dealer from whom I bought the car if I could add a homelink and he quoted me a ridiculous price of over $1500 , presumably because he did not want to do it. The salesman as well as the main Toyota Customer Service person could not even tell me if it could be done. Sine there is one in a Prius IV wiht a solar package, I felt it should be possible.
I went to another dealer nearby and had it installed for $ 341 plus tax (both labor and the mirror). They no longer make the mirror with a compass which I did not need anyway.
I hope this helps anyone who may want to get the mirror replaced. The labor was $150 and the mirror was $191. I programmed the Homelink using the instructions from the Liftmaster site and it works.

my toyota dealer (camelback toyota) lists the mirror + installation for $289. This is before a 15% discount they give to all new-car buyers.

Because of the large price discrepancy, I went to their website and it states that their mirror is for a car without a sunroof and that the mirror conflicts the factory installed sunroof.
I have the Prius with the solar packege.

I have a trim II.. it would seem weird not to have the wires present.. if they are there in a trim III.

I've done the mirror swap on lots of other vehicles, but not a prius yet..

can anyone confirm the wires ARE there?
    the install instructions say not

First, I'd like to make a distinction regarding wiring.

    • One possibility is that ALL the needed wiring is there for installing the self-dimming homelink, including the very important plug which snaps into the mirror. My understanding is that the plug brings positive and negative to the mirror, and lets it snap into the mirror.

    • The other possibility is that one can find positive and negative wires to tap into, but that the plug which lets it snap into the mirror (often called the pig-tail) is missing. In this case, one has to also buy a harness kit as I did. Not expensive.
While I don't know for sure, I think a qualified mechanic could take a harness kit and find positive and negative wires somewhere to tap into. I had my homelink with compass mirror installed by an after-market shop which my dealer refers its "one-off" business to.

While I don't have a sunroof, they didn't even ask about it when they priced installing it. They only asked me to get the harness kit.

My best bet is that it can be installed in a Prius with a solar roof or sunroof by a somewhat creative mechanic.

    Sam,

The mirror wiring harness with a plug for the mirror is NOT there. However, as the above pdf document illustrates, there are wires you can tap into with T-tap connectors as long as you have the pigtail that actually plugs into the mirror. I had only about 4" of wiring in addition to the plug that came with my used mirror (removed from a 2010), so I had to purchase wire and t-tap connectors and construct my own harness by soldering extensions onto what came with the mirror. It wasn't that hard and only took a couple of hours. You can buy the necessary wiring and t-taps at your local RadioShack.

The black/white wire in the map light wiring is ground, the red wire is BAT, and the third wire that you must run down to the gray wire on the mirror switch is IGN. It was not too hard to remove the required panels and I carefully followed the pdf instructions. Be careful when you pull the map light, and I would suggest you carefully (gently!) remove both lenses as they are vulnerable to breakage (the pivot clips) prior to removing the map light. I did break one lens pivot/retention clip but was able to superglue it together and no one can tell the difference.

I am very pleased with the result. It saved me hundreds vs having the dealer install it and thousands by not buying a IV.

thank you, very clear.. sort of 'as expected' if the 'kit' want s to run a harness, unlikely the wires are there..

I would buy a mirror with a pigtail as u suggested.. and its only the one wire to drag all the way down under the dash. Agree, not to hard following these and other instructions.

we have a remote control motorized entrance gate on our property, so the homelink (if it works) mirror would eliminate one extra piece of hardware floating around the car.

I ordered a used autodim mirror with compass that I've done before, but it doesn't have homelink on it.. and I still have to drag the one wire..

some have complained about the rear hatch crossbar blocking the dimmer sensor..

I wire my own hotrods, so taps, heat shrink, solder are all frequent use tools around here..

after review with the gate opener company, homelink wouldn't work.. so I bought a used autodim/compass mirror (silverado/gentex) and wired it up.. only NEED to connect two wires.. power and ground.. third if you want to disable dim while in reverse.. I ran that wire so when I do the backup camera/nav head unit install I can patch it in.

    works great.

Is this "pig-tail" something I specify from the place I buy the GenTex mirror or something I get from my local Toyota Parts department?

    Thanks.
