Instead of continually clicking the button on the remote, just hold it down. When I programmed my parents older opener that's what I had to do. Our opener is a newer one, so on the back of the motor unit is a button marked "Learn" you need to use that to program it. Check your unit to see if there is a button like this.

I just "programmed" mine on my '06.
I think you need to hold the buttons for a longer time...

I had to hold both the buttons (the remote and the rear view mirror button) for a long, continuous time (maybe a 60 seconds or more, really!).

 

I have two sears/craftsman garage door openers that are about 8 years old and I got the homelink working on both.

First off, make sure you have fresh batteries in the remote, because you have to push and hold the remote button for a long time and if the batteries are on their last legs, the remote might peter out before the programming sequence is done. When batteries are almost dead, they will drop off after sustained use, but will recover after a short period of rest. So, even if your remote is working for the amount of time it takes to trigger the garage door opener, the batteries may not have enough juice to maintain the long sustained signal that the progamming sequence needs.

Secondly, as implied by the first paragraph, you need to press and hold the remote button for the entire programming cycle.

Thirdly, there should be a red button on the back of your garage door opener. After completing the homelink programming sequence, you need to press that button to put the opener in learn mode and then press the homelink button within 30 seconds. (See the next paragraph for an additional requirement)

Lastly, the homelink buttons will work a little slower than your remote. While you might be able to do a quick click with your remote, you have to press and hold the homelink button for about a second in order to open the door. This is also true when you press the learn button on your opener. Make sure you press and hold the homelink button for several seconds after pressing the learn button on you opener. I don't know why it doesn't work faster, but I've read complaints from other people with the same issue.

 

You may be surprised. I have an OLD garage door opener and couldn't get the homelink to work with it until I followed the instructions for rolling code. Now it works. Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

This might also seem like an obvious one, but I messed it up. While programming, like the manual says, make sure the batteries in the garage door opener remote are facing away from the homelink. Mine wouldn't work until I faced the batteries away from the homelink.

 

I have a garage door opener not branded craftsman, but it is the same. It is an older one that does not have rolling code. The red indicator is steady when I transmit to open my door.
I also programmed my parent's garage door but did not have their opener learn the rolling code from the homelink. It blinks rapidly when it transmits their code.

If the garage door is rolling code, once the homelink is programmed, the red light will blink fast when it transmits. Non-rolling codes will have a steady red light. That's how you can tell if you have rolling code or not.

 

What garage door opening function? I've got the Australian model and have no idea what you are talking about.

Typical, our Prius retails (with I-tech pack) for just under $45,000 [$48,000 after stamp duty etc] Aussie Dollars (that's $36,000 USD) and we seem to have half the functionality you guys do :angry:

Homelink Kit with Craftsman 1/2 Horsepower

I have a modern (2008) 1/2 Horsepower Craftsman with the "learn" button behind one of the two bulb covers.

After trying the hand remote and holding both Homelink and remote buttons for more than 30 seconds I did get the rapidly flashing light on the Homelink. However, the Homelink did not control the garage door opener.

So I tried something else.

I pulled into my garage with the car on. Placed it in park and remained right below the garage unit. I then used the running board of the Prius to reach the opener. Opened the cover on the drivers side of the garage opener and pressed the orange "Learn" for one second. The green LED on the garage opener turn on solid and I made my way back to the cocpit of the Prius. Then I held the Homeline #1 button and almost immediatly the garage opener gave it's customary two flash/click for confirmation.

Now I have a working homelink on my Home. I assume this shoud work with any "Learn" system.
