My 2006 Prius just starting making a high pitch noise only while driving. Does not make the noise while not moving. It appears to be having no other symptoms. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Something thin and tinny rubbing a brake rotor?
Are any of the brakes hotter then the others?

Maybe you have a low brake indicator on your pads. It's warning you the brakes are low

Jack it up, spin the wheel by hand and listen. Might just be the low pad metal tab as JC mentioned.

Water pump and/or belt tensioner bearing? OP could be moving forward under battery power to a point before the gas engine kicks in. OP could be stopped and the gas engine does not turn on.

Where does the sound seem to be originating? Engine compartment? Front R/L/Both, Rear R/L/Both?

    How many miles on car?

Put the car in inspection mode and engine will run continuously so you can listen to it.

Oil full.....belt worn.....red specks all over front of engine reflecting leaking and blown water pump.

All fluids are fine. I do not have the ability to hoist it up high. I do note a tire shows being low. Last time the car was in (2017) I was told brakes will need to be done in 2018. Thanks for the responses from you all!

    Brake pad wear limit indicators

The brake pad wear limit indicators on
your disc brakes give a warning noise
when the brake pads are worn to where
    replacement is required.
If you hear a squealing or scraping noise
while driving, have the brake pads
checked and replaced by your Toyota
dealer as soon as possible. Expensive rotor
damage can result if the pads are not
    replaced when necessary.

    I'll go with the inverter.

If the sound is a high pitched sound, it's the brake indicator. If the sound is not high pitched, then it's your tires making the noise

Does it vary in pitch and intensity/volume as speed varies? Any pulsation felt in steering column? Do you hear it more pronounced on sweeping curves? If yes to any of these I would suspect wheel bearings.
