My passenger's side high beam has apparently burnt out. Two questions, please:

First, from online videos, it seems like any moron (that's me!) can replace the bulb without tools. Is that correct? Any pro tips?

Second, it appears that I need a 9005 HB3 bulb. But when I go to Amazon and search for that, there are a bunch of products, some indicating 500% brighter, some indicating cool white, super white, etc. I do *not* want to upgrade -- I want to match my current bulb exactly. Any idea how to sort among the 100s of Amazon results to find something that looks exactly like OEM? Doesn't necessarily have to be manufactured by Toyota, but does need the same output.

    Thanks,

    Ron

You'll have to take the air box horn intake out of the way. A 10mm socket will do that.
Or you won't be able to reach your hands in to get to plug and bulb.
Look in your owners manual for the correct bulb. It will depend on which type you have.
Where did it say you needed the 9005 bulb?
You can always remove the one installed and get the number off of that. IF, someone didn't replace
the original with something else. But if you get that number off the bulb, then you'll know which one to get.

I bet you could get an exact replacement from a Toyota dealer, maybe much easier and not
a lot more expensive than ordering online.
    Also any auto parts store.

Do ***NOT*** touch the new bulb with your bare skin.
Body oils can degrade the bulb and cause early failure.

9005 or HB3 is exactly what it says in the owner's manual (which also has the instructions you can follow to change it, in the Do-it-yourself Maintenance section).

The key to getting a bulb that is plain 9005 or HB3 and not some all-singing, all-dancing, 500% brighter nonsense is to go into your local friendly auto parts store, find the aisle with the headlight bulbs, and look down around your ankles. Those are the pegs where they hang the plain standard bulbs, hoping you'll only see the all-singing all-dancing ones they hang on the pegs at eye level.

For some reason I thought it was h8 and H11 but no matter in our gen 3s we're running LED fanless with big heat sinks they'll just twist right in and plug right up in the Gen 3 there's no issue with this and the generation 2 you have to adjust the up and down headlight adjuster about 9/2 turns righty and you'll see the cutoff form on your garage door and then put that cut off where you want it in the Gen 3 with the fake projector you don't have to really do anything

Gen 3 has projectors for low beams and reflectors for high beams.

The last LED headlight retrofit bulbs I looked at came with a recommendation against using them in reflectors.

I would agree as in reflectors they're very hard to find the cutoff when I put them in my Gen too I had to righty tidy the screw closest to the radiator and forward the up and down screw nine half turns to the right until the cutoff was visible then I put that cut off line on the mark I made on the garage door then of course I did the same to the other side I figure for the high beam in the Gen 3 no adjustment needed You're looking for bright and blinding regardless and because of the projector low beam it can be the default type bulb the LED that is because the cutoff is built into that housing.

To the OP, yes, you want 9005 or HB3 bulbs. Plural, always replace bulbs in pairs. You can keep the working one as an emergency backup bulb, but install new ones in pairs.

Absolutely agree. If they are the high beams, I would replace both with a fan cooled 6000K LED lamp set. I've never had to replace a LED headlamp (knock on wood). I can't say the same for HIDs. I used to work swing shifts and did a lot of night driving - while the HIDs were great, when they worked - they were a real pain when they went out. I once lost a bulb on one side and a ballast resistor on the other. Had to move the ballast from the burnt bulb side to get home. Switched to LED's and never looked back. Newer LED technology, less than 5 years old is almost as good as HID's and consume less power overall. You don't have to worry about melting OEM wires

Is “south of here” location close to any Toyota dealership part department? They should have the stock bulb.

Page 476 (plus a reference to page 474) of Owner's Manual has "some" info on high beam bulb replacement
