HG replacement -cam carrier RTV

    IMG_8308.jpeg So I am finishing up replacing the head gasket in a 2012. I have watched several different YouTube videos to get the answer but I’m getting conflicting info on where to put the rtv sealant when placing the cam carrier back on the head. In the gasket masters video they say not to put any on the left side where the timing chain cover is as it is meant to flow over the side. In the sane auto video as well as the MrB head gasket video they don’t go into detail and only show a quick segment as they set the cam carrier on but the rtv looks to go around the entire perimeter, including around some of the holes in the front and back that gasket masters does not. Does anyone have a photo of what the service manual recommends? Thanks in advance. Getting close to having it wrapped up

    I believe this is where Gasket Masters sub'd Permatex Ultra-Black. More readily available, and much more leisurely cure time I believe.

    I like the real-world technique I've seen Gasket Masters use for applying the the liquid gasket, just going along the path putting a dab every 1/2" inch or so, then patting and smearing it uniform. The Repair Manual explanation regarding diameter of the bead makes sense to a draftsman, but seems awkward to execute. With Gasket Masters technique, where Toyota spec's a thicker bead, just tighten up your dab spacing. And when done, look for thin spots, add an extra dab or two.

    Again, the permatex ultra-black info says it has a longer cure time, so no need to get it all placed and the item installed within 3 minutes (spec'd by Toyota). One caveat: Toyota says 2 hours before adding oil and test running. I believe Permatex recommends 24 hours.

    Full disclosure, I've never had the "pleasure" of doing a head gasket, hopefully never have to. :)
