    Though they're certainly one of the more interesting sideshows in the automotive world today, in volume terms hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) are still nothing but a sideshow.

    But that will change in the next couple of years, with at least 15 new HEVs coming onto the North American market by 2007. That would mean more than 20 choices for people looking for a high-tech way to save fuel, the money it costs or the environment it bruises.

    This is the projection of CSM Worldwide, a global consulting firm which describes itself as "a leading authority on automotive market intelligence and forecasting." The upcoming models yet to join the HEVs already on the market over the next three years would include:

    In 2005, Honda Accord, Lexus RX400h and Toyota Highlander;

    In 2006, Chevrolet Equinox and Malibu/Malibu Maxx, Ford mid-size sedan, Honda Odyssey, Mercury Mariner, Nissan Altima, Saturn Vue and compact Sportback, and Toyota Camry;

    In 2007, Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Sierra and Yukon, Honda Pilot and SUT Hummer H2, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

    Interesting article,
    As usual still sells the Prius short regarding mpg in the closing paragraphs ("There have also been many Toyota Prius owners upset by how far short of the billed mileage their vehicles are getting in real-world driving") We are around 50 mpg lifetime so far with 13,000 miles on our '04 Prius.

    The author also talks about the break evan point for the hybrid savings as 160,000 km or just shy of 100,000 miles (assumptions include, first one mine and the second one his, include that this was based on Prius efficiency not overall class mpg or another specific model and that the price of gas doesn't change). I guess that means I will actually end up saving money in the end. The car that our current Prius is replacing has just over 200,000 miles on it and the car that the Prius on order is replacing has over 150,000 miles on it.... OK, I admit it, the second car was bought used with 43,000 on it so maybe no savings there. :mrgreen:

    Why do they list Chevrolet Silverado as coming in 2007 when GM says it will be out (regional availablilty) in 2005? Of course I don't think they should even include it in the list given its puny use of hybrid technology for near zero benefit.
