HELP PLEASE- I NEED A NEW HYBRID BATTERY, CAN'T AFFORD. CAN SOMEONE REPLACE THE DEAD CELLS?

    Hi Folks,

    I live in Fairfield County Connecticut.

    Does anyone know of someone who can replace the cells of the battery,

    or someone that can install a used one.

    Your posting is rather thin on details. The bad news is, if you're having a problem and bad battery cells really are the problem, you're not going to find any super-cheap magic fix. A well-reconditioned battery will probably run you $1600 to $1900 or so, a new one from Toyota a few hundred more. By obtaining individual cells you might save some cash up front but you'll be trading it for quite time-consuming labor and you could end up playing whack-a-mole and getting very good at taking your battery apart.

    That was the bad news. The good news is, you haven't told us anything about your problem yet, or who said you need the HV battery, or why you think that's your issue. Knowing your trouble symptoms would help, and what would really help would be the exact diagnostic codes from a Prius-aware scanner. Even if your trouble is the battery, there are some battery problems that pretty much require replacement, and other battery problems that would likely be repairable with no parts needed. The trouble codes are where we would need to start to be sure what problem we're facing.

    ...sounds like you have some helpers...the other "poor man's" option you have is salvage I guess from a crashed Prius, but I am not the expert.

    Yep and yep! Why buy a recon battery when you can get a new one for a few bucks more, if it's the actual problem :eek:

    If indeed he has a 2002 Prius, then a battery made from Gen2 cells, like the ReInVolt may be more reliable.

    Given when they quit making Gen 1, it may also be newer, just used. Unused but sitting on a shelf for 10 years is not good for batteries.

    welcome to priuschat! the problem with finding, replacing and balancing bad cells is that it's time consuming. if you do it yourself, no big deal, it's your time. if you have to pay someone to do it, your probably better off replacing it with a rebuilt or salvage. all the best!(y)
