Push the passenger seat forward and get him in the rear footwell behind the seat? Or is that not happening, lol.

Our Shiba usually hangs out in rear seat footwell, occasionally jumps up on seat for a look see. But yeah, he's around 27 lb.

 

Just fasten the seatbelt if the dog insists on riding shotgun. I don't think the car knows if it's in front of or behind the dog. I haven't tested the theory, but I think that's how it works.

One thing bothers me when we transport our dog, is the lack of restraint. Tough to deal with that effectively, but I'd suspect if the dog's in the rear seat footwell zone that'd at least help.

 

We always use dog crates in the car. That is one reason my son upgraded to a Prius v when he replaced his first Prius. That is also why I bought a Prius instead of another Corolla.

 

Do you use hold-down ties the crate? Even then it's like being in the back of a paddy wagon, but at least it's all flat/smooth surfaces.

 

We use hold down ties for any crates in the cargo area.. If we just have a crate in the back seat, we sometimes use the seat belt.
My son travels to dog shows in the eastern US with his dogs so he tries to keep them safe.

 

Mendel, without restraints, in a frontal impact your faithful friend is likely to become a heavy projectile into the back of your head. A word to the wise.

I don't want to make dogs sound unimportant. I love dogs. But they are way tougher than humans and more likely to survive being the object flying around the inside of the car than we are to survive being clobbered by the dog. That's what's always made me a little nervous about having an unsecured dog in the car. It's not only potentially dangerous for the dog, but it's also a little little like having a padded toolbox on the seat next to you.

That depends on the size of the dog. I do not think my son's Papillons would fare too well at only 8-10 lbs.

You might be right. Cute little thing, though. No offense, but if it can accidentally get sucked up in a vacuum cleaner, is it really a dog?

 

I agree with the seatbelt for the front seat, chances are it will entangle the dog in any sort of sudden stop

 

Definitely noisy ones but my son chose to breed them. My latest puppy is this larger breed. I bought a Prius because we figured a Corolla would be too small for transporting the dog.

Once had a Sheltie, (Shetland Sheepdog), like a miniature "Lassie" and originally used in the Shetland Islands to stay outdoors and keep the sheep from eating from the vegetable garden. Their coats had long hair to fend off wind and rain with a fine thick thatch of hair as an invisible blanket underneath that. His size was reduced by about 50% when we shampoos him in the bathtub. He hated that almost as much as the blow dry afterwardst till he looked like a Dandelion clock. About the same size as yours, pp! So many stories I could tell, but not now.
