Headlights

I think that it is easier to go HIDs rather than LEDs.

I've been thinking about this modification--making my own high power LED bulbs. There are some pretty bright LEDs out now, but they would require their own optics and good heatsinking.
Search for Cree MC-E or SST LED. These are quad die emitters. Very bright (but need a lot of good heat sink). You could also do a set of 3 or 4 Cree XP-G emitters, each driven at a lower current.
Also, I'm not sure if an output of 500 - 600 lumens per headlight would be enough? Maybe it more than enough, actually?

 

Well I don't really know, but I have an LED bicycle headlight that puts out 920 lumens, and I can't imagine using that thing as a headlight on a car. I don't think it is nearly enough light....

 

What do you find Inadequate about the stock headlights ?

I am wondering same thing, but now I just keep modifying my fog lights to led operated. It is look much easier task.

 

I am very close to doing this conversion my self. I've aquired used LED light assemblies off ebay over the year. I actually ended up with two passenger sides and one driver side. all of them with broken tabs but Toyota makes $35 tab repair kit too so no issue there.

but the issue is, these lights, being a collision replacement units, don't come with ECU/Controller. These ECUs are about $380 per side. I've searched high and low but these are not available used as they don't get damaged during collision and bodyshops simply replace damaged housing and reuse the ECU. At this point I can't justify spening additional $800 to do this conversion.

New LED light assemblies are about $600 a piece. I got mine for about $100 average per side.

so at this point, I am debating if I should hang onto these and see if I can find used ECUs or win a lottory. Or sell the light assemblies as is.

 

After some extensive research you will find that a lot of the expensive HIDS can be found very cheaply. They all look like they are made in China.

I remember looking at a website and they guarantee a super slim HID for £129 but on ebay they sell the exact same looking HID and everything else for £30.

I went for the £30 and it works amazingly except it interfers with the Radio or the HU with the Satnav.

So if you don't have the higher package of the HU with Satnav then go for the HID. IT is very cheap and very easy to install. It costed me £30 and I am very happy with it. I just need to adjust the level.

I might go OEM LED (the light tech package) but only to solve the pproblem of the radio and that will set me back £950, so still deciding on that.
