I'm considering changing my head gasket out myself. I feel fairly confident that I am able to do it. I have most the tools required and I've done most everything to all my other cars in my whole life. with all the YouTube videos explaining in detail step by step it doesn't seem over complicated. my question is what kits should I use to replace everything I need. obviously the head gasket but timing chain tensioner. various o-rings. head bolts. I'm having trouble determining exactly what kits or parts I should purchase. if anyone has links of kits that would be amazing. thanks so much on advance 2010 Prius 196k.
There is a Toyota gasket kit that comes with all the Gaskets you'll need... I would also get the Fel-Pro Head Gasket and use it instead because it is better. Also, might want to get a new water pump and thermostat since you are there. You'll want to get a new PCV valve and might as well install an oil catch can if you haven't already. Clean out the ERG system. You might as well put in new coolant and oil. And clean out the throttle body. Call around and book an appointment with a machine shop to work on the cylinder head. That's what took me the longest to do because everyone was booked up around me and I had to figure out how to do it myself. The head gasket is the easiest part. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
The complete Toyota gasket kit and head bolt part no's are listed in the attachment. For a DIY'r in particular the safest route is to just replace the head bolts. There's a couple of head gasket related links in my signature too. This gasket masters video is imformative too: I'd echo @bisco : clean the EGR and intake (has EGR passages), if you don't want the new gasket failing in short order. Inspect those pistons and inspect that bottom end well it will not surprise me to get it back together and flop a rod over or it's a mess a hot mess I wouldn't want to be in your shoes again I just change the engine. These open deck designs are weak by nature so when they start to fail mess up whatever you want to call it you want to well maybe get out of it unless you're re machining and that's very costly
