I have a 2012 with about 32k miles. The hatchback struts no longer hold the rear hatch up which is a bit ridiculous, imo. Toyota claims they are no longer under warranty which I think is a bit bogus especially since the replacement parts are nearly $400 with tax for the pair. I remember buying a pair of these years ago for another car for about $100. I am wondering if others have had struts go in under 3 years and if any of you know of a hidden warranty on this item.

If I were you I would write a letter to the President of Toyota and find out whether they are still under warranty or not, before your car reaches 36,000 miles. I would also call Toyota Customer Service immediately and get your problem documented. They will give you a reference number so you will be protected in case they are still covered by warranty.

I'm not sure when the 2012 came out but assume it was in 2011 in which case maybe the car was bought more than 3 years ago.

Even if that is so, I would hope that Toyota would do something about it.

Get the dealer to explain why these aren't covered by the 36 month 36k mile bumper to bumper warranty.

Your ID with the message says you have a 2011 Prius: Is it 2011 or 2012? Key question is when did you buy it? If over 36 months ago then you're past the warranty period. If not they should be covered at 32K miles.

I had that problem with my 1986 Honda CR-X when it was well beyond warranty. I ended up cheaping out, and used a collapsible hiking stick to prop up the hatch. I'm hoping I never have to do that with my Prius.

If you are out of warranty, or just want a better than OEM lift support, try "STRONGARM GAS CHARGED LIFT SUPPORTS", part no. 4686. When I bought mine in March 2012, they were on sale at Advance Auto for $21.59 each. They fit perfectly, are easy to install, have a limited lifetime replacement warranty and are still working great after two and a half years.
