Hatch actuator or a fuse?

Hoping someone can guide me on this - the hatch of our 2005 will no longer open. It's not the gummy handle issue (got that on my 2008). I can go inside and pop the hatch manually but it won't open from the outside. This problem started shortly after I broke something in the back and had small pieces of plastic I had to pick out of the latch. I've looked carefully and can't see anymore pieces stuck in the hatch actuator but I think I might have broken it. I understand it's pretty easy to buy a new one and plug it in but I wanted to double check that it's not a blown fuse before shelling out for a new hatch actuator. Can anyone tell me where the fuse is that opens the hatch (and if there are other things on that fuse?) Thanks for any assistance!

I'm sure there is a fuse that goes to the rear hatch to the lock mechanism it probably is in series with all the other locks on the car so just make sure you don't have any blown fuses that's the best way to do that and then if we're quiet when you push the button do you hear the actuator making that noise it makes kind of a click if you will indicating that your button pushing is actually trying to do something If not these buttons do get messed up not just the rubber getting yucky other than that it would probably be the actuator and they're very easy to change and they just plug in and you'll know if it works within seconds it will only take you minutes to change all the plastic trim just pulls up won't even need a screwdriver probably.

Thanks! It's not making any noise. But everything else on the car is working. Just wasn't sure which fuse to test and whether it's under the dash or under the hood.
Hoping it's just an easy fix. With such an old car I don't like to put too much money into it (and can't afford to) but I love it and would like to keep it going.

I have seen those lock actuators burn out when jammed. It is the most likely problem if your other door locks work since they are on the same fuse.

You can buy the hatch door lock on eBay. Installing it is a bit of work as several panels have to be removed if I recall correctly. Still it’s possible parked in your driveway or garage.

You could remove the panel covering it and inspect for jams and even remove it prior to buying another.

Finally, “bench” testing of the Lock and Door Status Switch is possible if desired. Use a separate FUSED 12v power supply if attempting the powered motor test. Jumping it using the Prius 12v battery could be dangerous or cause other issues.

    Thanks for the replies everyone!
Well, this is frustrating. I got a new hatch actuator off ebay and... it doesn't work either. Although I managed to set off the car alarm twice installing it. I don't know what to think. Beginning to wonder if there's a chewed wire somewhere. Oh well. Who needs a hatch back door, right?

The next step would be to test power with a meter at the lock, ideally while it’s connected. Pins 3 & 4. I would also verify it as described above by placing 12v on it while disconnected.

You also want to verify the built in switch as described above. One extra piece of information is the latch can catch without operating the switch. If you experiment with the off the car latch by manually closing it you will notice it has two positions that are closed. It takes the second position.
