So there is a beautiful 2016 Prius 3 touring with 39k miles on it. The seller has stated that it has a rebuilt title but has been professionally rebuilt and there are no issues with it. He is asking 15,250 for the car. I have never owned a Prius but I have had my eye on one for years. I just have no experience with rebuilt titles or what the value of one would be. Does anyone know if this is worth it or should I ask for less?

Please let us know the details from what type of damage it was rebuilt from? Some car accidents on a rebuilt title are a good deal... But rebuilt titles from flooded vehicles and certain types of collision damage are a bad deal... But in general the asking price is still too high for a a 4 year old Prius that is burdened with a rebuilt title.

Nope. Vehicle is WAY too complex for me to accept a "rebuilt" anything. I think you can do better.

List your location and someone here might be able to help you source a vehicle. This is a very friendly group!

Not sure what country you're in - your profile is blank.

BUT, I'd be talking to TOYOTA to see if the warranty is still intact. The Battery, while troublefree, comes with an 8 or 10 year warranty, depending on country.

Do you own a Fluke voltmeter and know how to use it? Do you own a really good set of tools and like working on cars? Do you own a hybrid capable code reader?

If no on all questions that means you will be at the mercy of the Toyota dealer at $150 and hour not sure wherever you live since you couldn't be bothered to list your state and your out of the 3/36 but the dealer would void that anyway as its a rebuilt title. You start throwing codes and the dealer will start scratching his head and launch a deep deep exploration on your wallet. And you will have no way out because please see my first 3 questions.

A 2016 Prius is incredibly complicated especially for a Prius novice who's only interest is getting good mileage. I know alot more about a Prius than you do and I would not buy a rebuilt title Prius.Seen to many rebuilt title horror story's on here.

The reality is that PRIUS' have been incredibly reliable.

BUT - the only issue could be, and as with any modern car - was it fixed properly. Here, "most" crash repairs are done well, but I hear that in some countries that isn't the case.

I would find out what the value of the car is in kelly blue book for this car and your location.
I would then start negotiating at 60% of that value.

Rebuilt cars can be a great value, but their warranty is void - which means that if you live in a CARB state you're not eligible for the 10y/150,000 battery and cat coverage.
Some banks will not loan money for a previously totaled car - or they charge a higher interest rate.......AND some insurance companies will not cover them for comp and collision - or they charge a higher rate.

If you can write a check for the car, and some repairs....and if you're not depending on it to make a living, it can be a great way to own a car that looks and drives like a 2016 Prius with 40,000 miles on the clock.

In short.... if you gotta ask.....it may NOT be a good deal.

    No, not really.

    Two things about rebuilt titles:

Any remaining factory warranty is null and void.

Some (most?) insurance companies won't issue full coverage which is required if financing.

Excuse me for being dumb, but does a "rebuilt title" mean a "rebuilt engine"?. I am not familiar with this phrasing.

It can but doesn't need to be ;).

Some are rear end hits and then someone "rebuilds them" once the insurance company has said it would cost too much for them to pay to have it repaired:cool:.

It is also known as a salvage title in other states(y).

It means a car that has been totalled by insurance due to the amount of damages sustained, resold (mostly at non-public auctions) as salvage/rebuilt and then "repaired" to be resold. Yes, the damages could be engine related (my casual observations of insurance auctions say less than 1%) but the vast majority are from body/frame due to wrecks. Others include: flood, repo's, and theft and these vehicles typically show no physical damage to the casual inspection.

Then there's the whole "washed titles" aspect. I personally have knowledge that happens too.

It legally stopped being an automobile when it was totaled by the insurance company. <things occur> It legally became an automobile again when it was granted a rebuilt title.

@fotomoto covered the things well. It's often a small time rebuilder who has got a less expensive way of rebuilding certain problems. Sometimes they really are good at it and they truly can economically repair a car that everyone else in town would lose money on because they don't know his trick.

Other times it's somebody who figured out how to cut a corner that gets missed until it is too late. So there's going to be examples both ways in your market.

@biscuit0318 You are swimming with delicious fish and hungry sharks too. Opportunity both ways here.

You can buy an identical car but without the branded title in fully functional condition for the same price.

Rebuilt cars are never worth more than the same car out of warranty AKA with 150,000 miles because the warranty is void

I’ve owned cars that should have been totaled and they can be a great deal if they are about 50% cheaper than the same.

so I agree fully with. ETC, your example is overpriced.

We have seen so many horror story’s on this site with rebuilt titles in a G2
Which is a tough little car much less it being a 2016.
And the car has electrical gremlins so many in fact we all used to ask is it a rebuilt title when it sounded bad.

Do a car fax see how bad it got hammered but if you don’t have a lot of car guy in you along with some strong electronics forget it.
Maybe a corolla or a Sentra but not a 2016 Prius.

    He's asking too much for a rebuilt... I wouldn't pay $15,250 for a 2016 with rebuilt title...

I’m still wondering where all the covid sales were, can’t say I’ve seen any better prices in the last 6 months

imo, the biggest problem with salvage is wiring. just like rodents, if there is an issue down the road because of a poor splice or corrosion, it can be extremely difficult to diagnose, find, and expensive to repair.
