The latest waffling by GM about the date that the mythical Volt will be on dealer lots appeared this morning in the Detroit News. A lot of us believe that GM will never really come up with it anyway and this is one of many indications that that is true.

I wonder if GM was leaking the bad news in advance of the upcoming Detroit Auto show since you can bet that one of the top questions from the press will be to ask when the Volt will be available. Possibly GM believes that leaking the bad news in advance will somehow defuse a public relations disaster.

With Oil at about $100 a barrel, Detroits annual showcasing of their usual gashogs will certainly fall flat with the press - but a soon-to-be released Volt would have at least given GM some cover.

Given that apparent mood on the part of the car buying public favoring higher fuel efficiency - it will be interesting to see how the press covers this years auto show.

Maybe they should start tapering back so by 2010 they can hope people will have forgotten all about the Volt.

That's a bit harsh, some of GMs offering can get 20mpg under ideal conditions.

The dolt's molt regarding the volt is hardly a jolt.

Not sure if the extra cash is going to help much... they are not developing the pack in-house.

Giving out contracts to multiple battery suppliers may be the fastest and safest way to play 10 years catchup but it comes with less control.

It looks like they have reallocated at least some of the costs. This morning a saw a new chevy commercial on cable TV for their fuel cell car. The commercial would leave you to believe that it is or soon will be available at your dealer, although, it did not say that.

I was wondering if Daniel wasn't going to join this thread? He was pretty certain that GM was not going to release the volt. Perhaps he passed out from hypoxia by laughing too much?

I get a charge out of discussions about the Volt. Some positive, some negative...

No wonder discussion of the Volt has us polarized. It's something to keep your eye on.

That is no mean feat, given the virtual nature of the car.

I wonder if we may be witnessing the beginning of 'de-marketing' the Volt.

Wow. They will have marketed the car, then 'de-marketed' it, all before it ever got to production. Thus saving themselves the costs of crushing.

    Brilliant!

They also save the costs of procuring all of the parts (and setting up the production line) for the car.... I wonder if GM will consider saving themselves out of business?
