GM says full-size SUV hybrids to retail for $50K-plus

    "WASHINGTON -- General Motors Corp. announced the prices of its full-size hybrid SUVs today, saying all of the vehicles would retail for more than $50,000.

    GM said the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid's suggested retail price would be $50,490 (two-wheel drive) and $53,295 (four-wheel drive), while the GMC Yukon Hybrid would be $50,945 (2WD); and $53,755 (4WD).

    Those prices include a $900 destination charge and pending IRS approval, could be eligible for a federal tax credit..."

    Oh. Snap.

    That's about as much as a loaded Tahoe LTZ. I'd have to do a feature comparison to see what the actual premium is.

    Still, though, GM's first entrant into the full-hybrid arena is sure priced for the upper-crust.

    The question now is, do you get a Yukon Hybrid or a similarly priced Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI (Diesel). 21/22 mpg vs. 18/24mpg.

    Santa Monica California has already reached the $3.57 per gallon mark and climbing for 87 octane. 18/24 mpg is a waste of G.M.'s time and money for a full-size Hybrid SUV.

    I would go for the Mercedes if I were to spend that kind of cash on a car. OTOH, I can find much better things to use the money on than on some fancy vehicle, like a good school for my children. Like someone else suggested, get two Prius instead, and have whatever you cant fit in the cars delivered.

    Although there are no official EPA numbers yet, GM at http://www.chevrolet.com/hybrid/?seo=goo_chevy_hybrid claims "while offering fuel efficiency you never imagined — an outstanding EPA estimated MPG of 21 city, 22 highway for 2WD models, and 20 city, 20 highway for 4x4. I""

    Since most everything GM does now is spin, unfortunately, the truth (whenever they finally DO get around to making a hybrid) will more likely be in the teens. Especially the way most lead foot drivers operate. Something about hybrid mpg in the teens that really smacks of GM.

    I thought road hog SUVs were already about $50k. That much for a true hybrid road hog, sounds like a bargain.
