I think outright bans on diesel could be shortsighted.

The cars can be made clean. There are higher costs in doing so, but ban diesels and you remove the incentive to improve upon that.

Moving to reducing carbon emissions and even getting to carbon neutral fuels will take a multi-pronged approach. BEVs won't work for everyone, and hydrogen requires a large investment in infrastructure. There is already renewable diesel fuel available at some stations, and other replacements being worked on. These for diesel seem more promising than gasoline for 100% replacement for cars and trucks already on the road.

 

Yes. Diesel isn't that different than gasoline. If they ban diesel then they should ban gasoline too. If a car company cheats, make that company either fix or buy back their defective cars, whether they're diesel, gasoline, electric or run on peanut butter and jelly.

Yes, the NOx emissions are harder to control in a diesel. But diesel has a much higher efficiency than gasoline. The Aptera got around 125mpg on gasoline. Yet the VW XL1 gets around twice that on diesel.
