So I got the codes after replacing my EGR with a brand new updated part plugged it up everything kosher connected Good to go start the car run the car still have the rattling in the eco range on the display If I'm in the red power range everything's working and running perfectly as soon as you back off the fuel and get out of the red the rattling runs from EV mode line all the way until the red power starts minute you get into the power engines running smooth everything is great. Then I had 18 codes including EGR and a bunch of stored and permanent and pending for the coil A and b circuits being questionable I think it's 0351 through 0354 so I bought another set of coils because this set that's in the car is about 4 years old and was running in the original engine when it blew up. Changing the coils made a little difference but some very disappointing to say the least I'm still inclined to believe that there's something going on in the transmission when the engine shuts off while you're sitting there in the driveway take your foot off the gas and the engine rolls down to zero there is a clunk and that clunk sounds like the multiple clunks that happened when the car is rattling to be honest with you it doesn't sound like springs in the torque plate are slamming but I have no idea what it is but I have my original transmission sitting here I'm just not really looking forward to pay to swap it out and have the same problem anybody in Central North Carolina interested in a Prius persona that's in pretty good shape other than this rattling business and it is not head gasket It is not the fire getting put out by water and now it is certainly not the coils all the coil codes are magically gone which I haven't had the coil codes this whole year and a half of having this problem until I put the new EGR in I basically had no codes The new EGR just went in yesterday. And then immediately after installing it and going to start the car My basic Innova code scanner told me there were 18 hits then I went and got tech off the shelf hooked it up to confirm all of those codes and in the freeze frame day to in tech for the 354 code it showed all kinds of stuff highlighted in orange which I guess that stuff that tech doesn't like to see your think something is wrong with I don't know what to do with the data none of it looks really erratic to me like engine RPMs will be off by 50 RPM in one block and it'll be 50 RPM more in another block in that block is orange same with the MAF readings and the MAP readings some of this stuff is highlighted in orange I guess in different blocks because it's different times it's happening or something I don't really understand it and don't care to. But it seems like the problem is more over towards the transmission side the engine is running beautifully there is not a skip miss nothing they're even wasn't with the older coils I still have them here in the box. I pretty much just want to give up and get back to my life this car is not a thing If somebody thinks they can fix it they're more than welcome because I don't even like anything about the car I'm in a leather generation too and very nice condition this generation 3 I'm working on can't even hold the partial flame candle to that not any kind of way anyway anybody down this way will want to work out a killer deal that they think they can fix this car this car's got all kinds of new parts and his pretty clean inside needs part of the front bumper cover replaced The paint is in good shape everything works on the car everything and it is nicely loaded but honestly I just feel it's a complete waste of my time at this point.

The engine was running good with no rattling until you put in a new egr valve? Or was it rattling and the egr did not fix it?

No egr P0401 or PO403 codes?

    No coolant loss?

    No hg changed?

The first part of your description sounds like egr stuck open or a bad hg leak. Maybe a vacuum leak (egr, pcv, evap).

If your scanner can do egr step controls I would run that test with the map pressure sensor being monitored per the P0401 test while in maintenance (inspection) mode for a continuous idle. It can verify egr flow is not happening at low rpm’s.

I will try and run that I maybe tonight tech is sitting in that car right now this is the car that's had a replacement engine and a replacement transmission JDM stuff generation 3 nothing fancy clean car ran good for 4 months just like a new one then all of the sudden while you're stepping on the gas halfway up the scale on the hybrid display it just rattles like crazy but it doesn't sound like the rattle you get from the head gasket leak we've already been through that and know all too well how that sounds this is a lot lighter if you will. But it is just annoying as all get out and I don't want to keep driving the engine like that because it sounds like hell and it sounds like it's going to rattle itself apart essentially but the rattle seems to be right there at the engine and transmission joint or further over towards a transmission so I don't know if something is just come loose in the tranny but I don't think so because it will clear up in the red like if I was always stepping on the gas the car runs perfect it's when you take your foot off the gas and that white line falls back into the Eco mode range or energy conservation range and then you lightly step on the gas it'll rattle rattle rattle rattle rattle rattle rattle But if I lay it down the gas pedal not so much It won't rattle until I back off which I have to do because traffic. It's very annoying we can't use the car so it's just like a brick sitting here taking up space in the driveway I wish I could pawn it off to some person that thinks they can do anything with a generation 3 so it could just go away I mean all of our other generation twos as expected or running perfectly and have no problems running hundred plus miles a day I just don't have time to fool around with this junk you know and said seemingly has no possibility of running correctly The number seem to look good I did change the EGR because from one of the videos I watched it look like I had a little bit too much gap in the part that opens on the end when the motor turns another person had fixed his rattle by doing this. I could never tell whether the EGR at shut off and end of cycle is supposed to be closed or would it remain where it was when last used and then close when you start the vehicle the next time or? Generation 2s don't have EGR as we know it so none of these problems I never had any problems with EGRs and other vehicles but they weren't variable and electronic and all of that.

I just thought it was strange that I got all these 18 codes right after I changed an original old EGR valve to the newer model EGR brand new out of the factory bag and box other than that I had had my original EGR valve and the one that came with the JDM motor in and out many times with no codes nothing going on but the engine and rattling the same change the plugs did all kinds of different stuff never a code never. Then all of a sudden I got this new EGR valve took it out of the box installed it got everything straight at least it seemed. Plugged up the new EGR valve booted the car up I had my cheap handheld with me at the time and like I say immediately I had 18 codes where I had never had any The whole life that we've had this car I think this car coded only when we change the engine.

18 seems like too many codes for doing diagnosis just by picking a few first and trying something.

18 seems more like a number of codes best to have a list of, and a chart with the actual detection conditions for each one (as looked up in the manual), and a highlighter for what those conditions might have in common, and a plan.

Yes that's what the Innova cheapo scanner noticed some of these are marked two different ways permanent pending stored and the same codes over so that's three times of four codes so that knocks out 12 of them and then there was two or three more I have them all written down and pictures on the page and all of that then of course I went and got tech out of the closet and hooked it up and all of the coil codes or for the previous set of coils I changed them out this morning for a brand new set to save the data for the coil A and b for all four of them cleared everything restarted the vehicle back to no codes still have the rattle etc etc so the EGR nor the coils made much of a difference but I never had all those coil codes before replacing the EGR valve and the car was off during all of this never attempted to start or anything. The coils I've had a couple years now so I just opted to buy another set The car doesn't run any better per se so I'm guessing the ones that coded maybe ok . I can check those on a 2zz Corolla engine anytime
