    Hello y'all,

I am in a bit of a sticky situation, I lost my one and only key to my 2008 Toyata Prius while on vacation and now I have a locked car sitting in the Indy airport parking lot that I cannot get into or use. I was hoping someone would be able to point me to a thread that includes equipment and procedures for reprogramming a new key. I am a scientist by trade so I would consider myself well versed enough with computers to do this myself instead of having to pay the dealership $500. I have looked around and heard references to the chicken dance but everything I can find only includes info if you have a key not the whole process. Would there be some saviors out there who can point me to equipment lists and procedures specific to Gen 2?

    Thanks in advance!

If you lost all the keys, you would need a qualified locksmith or the dealership to make a new key. There is not much you can do on your own once you lose all the keys. There needs to be a special security code you need in order to erase all the old keys and make new ones, and that security code can only be generated by a qualified locksmith or the dealership.

If you have AAA, they have some assistance they can give you in getting this new key. Depending on what membership level you have (gold or platinum), they will reimburse a little towards the new key.

Perhaps I am confused then, is the "seed code" thing that I have seen references around not the same as the security code?

A bit hard to do if you've lost all the keys.

You have to do this the minute you take possession of the car and the single key that you receive not doing this yields this at some point hopefully you're ready to get out of the car or pay the five or $600 to do what you can't and don't have the electronic tools for It's just that simple The day you get the car you're ordering a new fob case the next day it comes from Amazon you're busting it open and taking a picture putting the new case wrap on and if you're smart moving the sticker over that's what I do to every one of these I have like eight fobs in the drawer.

No it generally do not . He stuck paying lock folks or dealer . Because of this old Azz mistake . Folks born after 89nmay not have any ideas of these things. Don't keep things long enough always a new payment to acquire.

Even after deciphering, I'm still trying to understand how this helps someone who lost their only FOB.
Open your only FOB, take a photo. Of what? the number on the RFID chip?
Buy a new cover, move the RFID chip and sticker to it. It's still only one FOB, because now the original is of no use.
Then lose it. How does that help?

DO you mean buy a new FOB for $70 if you happen to buy a car with only one? Program it and keep it in the house so you have a spare in case you lose the one you normally use every day? So you don't have to pay Toyota or a Locksmith $700 to rescue you?

No I guess it really doesn't help at this point It's just the standing point of when you buy a vehicle You should open up the fob which is usually got worn out buttons and is disgusting anyway You're going to order a replacement case online I would hope most people would be thinking along these lines but then again. While you have that remote open it would behoove you to take a picture of all those things called FCC ID numbers in the sticker or you're going to be arriving at this game at some point It's just human nature. Many of you don't remember when you bought a car at the dealership from the Chevrolet dealer and the person who did the prep dealer install PDI work on the vehicle If you grabbed your manual from your glove box where the manual belonged and flipped it to the back page what would you see The two metal inserts that allow your key to fit on a key ring taped to the back of the manual with the factory numbers of the keys on those little metal tabs and the reason for that was exactly what's happening here funny how things change. That is why now you will need a dealer or a well versed locksmith to take your VIN and do all the deciphering necessary to get you back to status quo sorry to hear this for folks but oh well.

It's much easier and smarter when that remote that there's only one of us put in your hand and it's already 10 years old and you've been reading all this stuff online now for years about all kinds of things seems to me but then again. I'm saying crack the remote take a picture of the sticker put the new cover on the remote so the buttons don't look like well hell. And then you have all this information on a piece of paper in the glove box in your safe wherever you put things so that when this instance happens you pull out that piece of paper head to the locksmith say I need this cloned done. Or you do what you're doing now or they do what they're doing now. Like everything else in this world the prep work can make or break the job.

Seed code would generally be generated by a dealer or a locksmith or a person high up on the food chain in this industry I believe that's how that works I'm not sure what the security code is but I don't believe that has anything to do with the new seed code to apply another or new remote to your existing system I don't really understand all these codes and BS I just know what to do when I get a car new to me and one remote and that's all been spoken about above.

Yes it's a seed code. I just used the term "security code" because you would need to have the proper credentials in order to create the seed code

It's effectively the same. One uses an "OE level" scantool to pull a unique ID code out of the car's (immobilizer-SKS) ecu. That number is used to create the seed code on Toyota's server.

Enter the seed code into the car which will reset the ecu to a "new - receptive" state. Now new key fobs can be programmed.
