Next Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid To Have 30 To 35 Miles Of Range: Source

So, what are your thoughts if true? Speculations? Such as will it have the same mpg in hybrid mode as the Gen 4 prius, does it sacrifice the spare tire again?

Sure, it's not as much as the Gen 2 Chevy Volt's estimated 50 miles of EV range. But it's three times as much as the Gen 1 PiP, and being a Toyota, should have really good reliability.

Good for them if true, but I suspect that this the 20 to 25 mile figure on an easier test cycle. Either way, the plugin is going to lose some space beyond the spare for this range.

The real question is will it be available nationwide?

If the information is true to be truth, I will continue to support the Toyota flag for my family fleet of transportation.

That would be fantastic. I would love to see that.
If they combine that with selling it nationwide that would be phenomenal!

I won't be interested in one myself, but I know a lot of people would.

I will trade my current PiP for the new one....Would be awesome if it's true and hopefully they announce it with the Gen IV (or not too long after). Potentially 30 miles EV with 60 mpg (assuming it's more efficient that a regular Prius) would make it fun to drive for me.

My guess is that they forego the spare keeping lock-step with the competition.

Can't wait to see it, I hope they're not charging extra for the Wireless charging though.

So.....almost as much EV range as a G1 Volt, and probably still not EV capable at interstate speeds?
    Sorry, but color me unimpressed.

    Besides.....you can get a G2 Volt soon for $33K.
    Like.........they're already building them.

For many people, the Pip is a good car, and it has Toyota's reliability pedigree.
You can (still) get a G3 Pip for maybe a little less than a Volt if you score a good deal and you don't count the tax kickbacks, but I'm not seeing much of a sense of urgency by Toyota in fielding a second generation PHEV.

The G4 Pip sounds like it will be a product of inertia rather than innovation.

    YMMV

No need to color you unimpressed. We have no details while we have all the details of the Gen 2 Volt.

The largest denominator though besides hybrid mode mpg - is the size. The Prius Gen III still holds more than the Gen 2 volt. Perhaps the next PiP has a huge battery breakthrough beyond Tesla and is able to put in 30-35 miles EV without any compromise to space, plus higher mpg rating...

Who knows who knows. But in a couple months we should start hearing about the regulard liftback (sedan-ish?)

perhaps not in a new chassis.

MERGED30-35 is more than i need. unless the extra batteries are cheap and light. no way the spare is coming back, i doubt the new lift back will have one either.

Perhaps, but 30 miles is 33% further than the Energi's, and it is still a Prius. The current PPI lost the spare and the small under floor storage of the liftback. Even with better batteries, the next plug in will likely lose more space than that to the Prime/liftback in order to get 30 miles. If it doesn't, I would suspect the Prime owners of being robbed some storage space.

or they'll get more. or it will be an area you can't use for storage. call it robbed if you want to.

    Pure speculation...
The "source" did not even say on what test cycle those miles will be achieved and can escape in the future from accountability by saying something like "I meant in JC08 cycle and just converted km into miles".

If it is a Dedicated plug-in, sure 30-35 ev miles, but as a Prius Liftback option 20-25 ev miles is more than enough here.

I am in as long as they did not trade space & hv mpg for ev miles.

Tell me more about this possible "wireless charging"??

Ie. Is this is a possible real thing? How far away from your house can it be? How long will the charge take? Sounds awesome for us townhouse / condo folks..... Maybe....

it's a mat you pull your car over. it's expensive and inefficient.

and if you step on it? zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz:eek::pMERGED
same here. prius does not need to be all things to everyone. it's primarily a highly efficient mode of transportation. it does not need more ev miles with very iteration.

lol say what? You don't get electrocuted. It's like a heavy mat that you drive over - you don't have to be perfect. It's like what we have on cell phones right now, except the phone one is not efficient. 2amps input outputs like 1.5amp.

If direct charging losses thru wall is 10%, hope this is not >15%.
