Been a long time since I posted on here. Had some “odd” things happen to my 08 with 255,900 miles this week. Car left me stranded with no warning other than the so called dash Christmas tree , went into limp mode and lost AC. Had to take to dealer as I didn’t have my TechStream with me. Dealer pulled codes C1241, C1242, C1249, and C1300. During troubleshooting the MG1 had no voltage, ABS 1&2 we’re not engaging, battery was at a stable 12.3v. Additionally, I found that the inverter coolant pump was not working (no turbulence and no vibration). Replaced the relays for ABS 1&2 first and lights came back on within 5 miles. Tech suggested replacing front passenger wheel speed sensor due to a failed shock earlier this year, replaced sensor in hotel parking lot and warning lights came back on within 5 miles after replacing that. There was never a code for the inverter coolant pump, but it clearly wasn’t working. The stop switch for 1249 was working fine, all three brake lights were working. Reading some posts on here I found that sometimes the inverter coolant pump going out will trigger the 1249 code. After I replaced the inverter coolant pump in the hotel parking lot I returned to the dealer and the tech did a ride along with me for 40 miles with TechStream connected. No codes came back and no warning lights popped up. Initial fears were the dreaded brake accumulator and/or skid control ECU. Breaking down in the middle of the Texas desert was no fun with two dogs along for the ride. Taking it on another long test drive tomorrow before completing our trip.

I’d like to thank PriusChat for all the great write ups about these codes and what may or may not clear them. The tech even learned something about the inverter cooling pump being constant and not temp controlled.

I’d also like to acknowledge the great work and customer service by Jesus (tech), Luis (service rep) and Rick (courtesy driver) at Toyota of Laredo in Laredo, TX.

Hopefully this helps someone, just like all the great info on here helped me.

You could read this thread that reviews several scantool apps and devices. Some are capable of scanning all systems on a Gen2 Prius. I have a couple in my glove box along with an old android phone (that has a pdf service manual on it as well).

Thank you for the reply Mr_guy_mann and link to that great resource. I bought a cheap CN VCI and TS disc and laptop about 5 years ago while replacing a Gen2 motor in another Prius. I have never needed it on my personal Gen2 until now. Guess it’s time to get an Android device and dongle for the glovebox. With 255k on the car, I suppose my luck finally ran out.

Relating to my latest experience, is it common for the inverter coolant pump to fail and not trigger the code?

I’m still nervous and anxious about heading out because I’m begging the question; what caused those relays to all fail simultaneously? I grabbed an extra ABS relay for the glovebox as insurance.

I live in central Mexico so there are some stretches of desert highway that are brutal and with little to no help. I’m just thankful the issue popped up right as we were crossing the border into the US and there was good dealer support in Laredo.

Thanks again for the great link. I’ll have to order one and familiarize myself with it once we get home.

If the inverter got hot enough to shut down things like A/C, (or the DC-DC converter), then I would expect that there would also be a P0A93 (inverter cooling system performance) code.

That said, "never say never". I have seen enough weird things happen that should have set codes but didn't (or set codes that weren't expected).

I wouldn't be surprised if the ABS voltage codes were set because 12V system was low (DC-DC shutdown) - and not because both relays "failed" at the same time.
