Hello, Yes I am new on here. I recently purchased my first Hybrid vehicle - I was tired of being stuck in traffic and having to shift gears in my other car. Well, I purchased my Gen 1 sight-unseen. When I got it, it needed to be towed since it needed a new battery (the regular battery). I had it towed to my house where I put a fresh battery in there. I then drove my "new" car to the local grocery store. On my way home, my CEL and other warning lights came on. I got home, checked the codes with my generic scanner and discovered that the car may need a new hybrid battery (excuse the noob language). While researching my options I came across some information on an extended warranty on certain hybrid vehicles from CA. Some posts said that the Gen 1 Prius' were except from the warranty. Others said that only certain Gen 1 Prius' were covered with that warranty. My question is, how would I know if my Prius is covered through the extended warranty in California? It is a 2001 and has 144,000. The warranty is supposed to cover <100,000 or <10 years old. Thank You! I have been searching for this answer but have come across opposing opinions.
I think you will find many places in this forum that the CA extended warranty on hybrid components applied first to the NHW20 (introduced for model year 2004), a point also made in the Wikipedia article on the Prius. That would mean that your battery is beyond warranty. But you will also find many threads covering the options available to you, which can run from dealer battery replacement at one end, through salvage batteries or replacement of individual modules at the cheap end, with a midrange alternative of batteries assembled from low-usage NHW20 parts by ReInVolt and some other suppliers. There are a lot of options, so enjoy the car! -Chap
Yep, AFAIK the 10 year/150K HV battery warranty on CA and CARB emission state vehicles began on the NHW20 (aka 04-09 Prius). The OP's Prius is a NHW11 and thus isn't covered by that and is definitely out of warranty now. Using the above generic scanner, can you give us the codes? Where in CA are you? OP, BTW, the wording in your post and title is confusing. An extended warranty generally refers to a warranty that one purchases to extend coverage beyond what the factory warranty provides. The CARB state 10 year/150K mile HV battery warranty and 15 year/150K mile emissions warranty are NOT extended warranties. They're included w/NHW20 and ZVW30 cars purchased, registered and operated in CARB states.
Thanks for the replies. I am in Davis, Ca. There were three codes in the generic scanner: P0306 and another stating the battery block 14 was weak (or something along those lines; I did not write the code down). Sorry that my wording was off - I was not sure of what exactly this was called. This past weekend, I have been researching my issue and from what I am reading I can just replace the blocks that are defective. In my case I would replace battery # 13, 14 and 15. Removing the battery does not look like its very difficult.

Will the battery off of an '09 fit an '01? Or will it need to be modified (ie '09 battery packs into '01 battery)?
