I'm trying to figure out if putting together a shipment from Japan of the door mirror with side turn lamps would be worth it, so please let me know if you might be interested. At this point we're not 100% sure of the price or if there is even the neccessary wiring in the US Prius, so this Group Buy is not 100% certain.

Price might be upwards of $375/pair.

    Here's a pic:

    Post if interested!

I'm in if they are already painted or colored to match.

Worst case scenario on the hook-up would be custom wiring and a replacement flasher. (Perhaps we can include the new flasher as part of the group buy?)

Of course, who knows when my car will actually arrive...

Are those the Auto-Fold ones as well?

As best I can tell, the Japanese Turn Signal Mirrors also Automatically Fold In when you turn the car off.

Great for those really tight urban areas.

Also, are they heated? I'd be loathe to give up my heated mirrors for the Turn Indicator.

    Beware!
Japanese & European Prius has side indicators (covered with partially translucent Hybrid logo at the picture). Wiring is pretty simple in this case.

More complicated harness in case of US version. [Broken External Image]:http://www.smailiki.nm.ru/zlo/st.gif

Yes, I believe they will be painted to match your color. I'll check soon about the other questions.

Before seeing this thread, I thought about putting two bright white or yellow LEDs back to back in a 1" tube, about 1/4" in dia, and mounting it such that one LED points through a forward hole and the other past the rear edge of the glass - there's room.

The LEDs would be powered by threading a wire through the existing conduits, past the dash, into the engine compartment, to a regulator/current-limiter and then to the existing turn signal lines.

I have a handful of <1W white ultrabright LEDs - they'd work and would cost almost nothing, but...

Luxeon 5W LEDs are incredibly bright, and I heard they can now be bought for about $12 each in quantity. That would be ~$60 per car....

caution to poster Eisonson: some states, if not some CHP's might not like white directional signals. some, if not many, states specify what colors can be used.

i'd be interested in the side-mirror directionals, too, Danny! I would probably decline if there's a sacrifice of folding and heated, and if i'd have to get them painted.

but wow, automatic folding?! that would be really cool, assuming it had an on-off switch to it! wouldn't want to do that all the time, but my garage is a bit narrow, and the extra clearance would be great to have!

    thanks for your efforts!

I've decided to stick rear-facing bright red LEDs in my mirror assemblies. It's a trivial task, and I think it's possible to use *existing* wiring! My family doesn't drive my geekmobile, and I really don't need to adjust the mirrors - but I'll install a switch somewhere that permits reversion to the original circuit just in case. Thus, in switch position A the turn signals will blink the LEDs, and in B the mirror control will work per original. When I get into it, I may even discover that it's possible to use a pair of leads that don't even affect mirror operation.

One of the collateral benefits is that it will be a bit more difficult to forget to cancel the turn signals. I can't hear the tick-tock, though in this car the heads-up display helps.

I would be very interested in these, provided the instalation is fairly easy.

I just found really sweet LED flexible amber self adhesive turn signals for just such a project. Got them at AutoZone; I'll post pics when I get a chance. Cost around $20.

Any further news yet on the possible mirror group buy? What have we learned about: (1) are they heated?; (2) do they auto fold?; (3) do they fold period?; (4) are they painted?

I have interest, but need some answers before I will commit.

I'm still waiting to hear back from JapanParts.com and a couple of other Japanese sources I have. I'll post details as I receive them...

Dianne's dealership has them for $399. I cannot tell if it is for one or two. They are quoting a four weeks delivery time.

Possibly interested, depends on difficulty of hookup / cost and all that other stuff like folding/heated/etc. :)

Definitely interested. Positive visibility - safety factor. Ease of installation is a concern. One more plus for the Prius.

Why wasn't this already a part of the US Prius models? With all the other innnovations and "standard" equipment, seems like a no brainer.

I would be interested if the mirrors retain the heated function.
