Gas tank...plate (?)

first time poster. I tried doing a search for this, but could not find anything.
A part of my gas tank seems to have gone missing. I do not know the name of this piece, so bear with me here:
You open up your gas tank from the little lever inside your vehicle. You then unscrew the plastic cap. Now, you can not see fully into the gas tank because the little round metal plate is there. When you put the gas nossel into the tank, the metal plate is pushed aside, when you pull the nossel out, the metal plate springs back into place.

I no longer have that metal plate. It must have fallen off or gotten stuck at one point when I was filling up. I took my Prius into the Toyota service shop and left it there for the day. The guy then told me that this was normal for the '06 Prius. He claimed that all of those models did not have that metal plate. I honestly think he was yanking my chain, for I distinctly remember seeing that plate. Now, I admit, my memory of seeing it there before could really be misleading me, but wow, I really do remember one being there.

Can anyone else confirm that they do or do not have this inside of their gas tank? Like I said, you will see it once you unscrew the plastic cap, and you can push it aside with your finger. Its about the size of a quarter, maybe bigger.

    Thank you

My 2007 does not have the plate about which you are speaking. There is just a hole with a diameter just large enough to allow the lead-free pump nozzle to enter.

Our previous car had such a plate so I know what you are referring to.

Welcome to the site. I just looked at mine. There is a black washer (for lack of a better term) in the neck but there is no metal plate. I believe you are mistaken as this has been a common (maybe universal) part for some 30 years.

No plate here either. My Avalon has it, so I also know what you're talking about.

The 2006 Prius has just a hole that snugly fits the standard lead-free nozzle - no plate.

Same with the 2005. And snug is no exaggeration. You almost have to unscrew the nozzle to get it back out.

Good description Dave. Oh! I also have no metal plate so I think the tech was right?

I had this question also when I bought my Corolla back in 2001. I think Toyota stops having that metal flap in some of their lines for years.

Yeh. I don't remember ever seeing the plate on the Prius. It has been on some of the other cars I've owned.
Maybe even all of the newer ones (newer being younger than a '95).

Wow, thank you guys! Yeah, I "noticed" this not too much long after I first purchased the car. I guess I was just mistaken, being that all my other previous vehicles had the same thing.

I can rest assured now, thank you very much everyone! B)

I'm pretty sure mine does have the "plate." Although, I don't gas up very often, so I could be mistaken. ;) :D

My 2006 Prius did have that "plate" until a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure why it's gone missing. I know for a fact that I had one, despite what the the dealer is telling me. Every time I finished pumping gas I would tap the gas pump nozzle against it. I've been trying to find a picture of it, but so far no luck. The car has been running fine without it, so I'm not worried about that - I just didn't like being treated like an idiot at the dealer....
