Interesting article in the local paper this morning about the effect of fuel costs on local commuters

    COPING WITH HIGH FUEL COSTS

    Gas prices hit commuters hard

    By TANYA FOGG YOUNG

    Staff Writer

Hartsville resident Amy Holt drives 68 miles one way to work in downtown Columbia four days a week.

And that means filling up the tank of her Ford Explorer twice a week — at about $40 a pop as gas prices continue to go up.

The cost of her commute to law firm Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough is getting so pricey that the accounts payable specialist is considering trading her SUV in for a smaller car with greater fuel economy.

“I’m really having to plan,†said Holt, 38, whose husband also drives an SUV. “I’m trying to cut back, helping myself out by bringing my lunch. Over $2 a gallon is a chunk of money.â€

In the Midlands, even though the price of gas is among the lowest in the nation, the increase is evident for many residents who commute long distances to work — especially if they have a vehicle with low gas mileage.

Using the current average for regular gasoline in the state, as provided by AAA Carolinas, and comparing it with a year ago:

    • Filling a vehicle with a 20-gallon tank is up almost $10 — from about $33 to more than $42.

    • For a 15-gallon tank, it costs nearly $7 more to fill — from more than $24 to more than $31.

    • Filling a 10-gallon tank, the difference in price is about $5 — from more than $16 to $21.

What's this? Gasoline prices are going up? I hadn't noticed. That must explain the irritated looks my SUV driving co-workers have been giving me lately.

I don't pity any of you...in my area, gasoline has already pushed above $2.50 at most stations.

I live in easternmost Iowa on the banks of the lovely brown Mississippi river. It's podunk redneck purgatory around here, but local prices are about 2.07 at the moment. I filled up the other day and it cost me $18.00. I was a little annoyed until I talked to my truck and SUV-owning coworkers about their gas pump experiences... and now I'm back to insufferably smug and happy :)

We keep CNN running at work. I swear I haven't even snickered once at the sudden rush of stories about the price of gas, but yeah, one of my co-workers commented today: "John's the only one laughing."

I'm not laughing, really. I do keep brochures on the Prius and Accord with me (added an Insight info-sheet today) to pass around at every opportunity. What's a religious zealot, after all, without his Bibles?

One of my co-workers is fed up enough to have sworn he's buying a hybrid. Another, apparently immune to my charisma, is about to plunk down on a Volvo SUV.

Sypmathy for low mileage SUVs??, yeah, right. It's hard to have sympathy for someone who bought not one, but TWO SUV's and is now wringing her hands at the cost of commuting. God forbid she might have to buy something under two tons! It's not like anyone tried to hide the bad mileage from her. She didn't give a s**t when she bought the things, and now she's stuck.
Americans are living in a dream world about the true cost of the energy they squander. We're pumping billions of dollars into countries who support people trying to kill us. DUH?
I heard a program on the radio that suggests that even some of the hawks in DC are getting the picture and connecting the dots about foreign oil and national security.

The radio report today said to expect gas prices to almost double what they are now... Yes, $4/gallon or $2-2.50/litre.

    I smiled even bigger :p

Here in the Orlando area (away from the tourist areas) gas is around $2.30. I had to mention at work yesterday that I was at 565 miles on this last tank, about 55mpg. I had a bunch of moans from a few and one even said they are looking into getting a hybrid. At one of the last auto auctions they had 18 up for auction each went for around $18,500 for a 2004 basic car only. I got to fill up today as I went down to my last bar as I pulled into work. I'm not looking forward to over $20.00 for a tank but I still have that smile 8) on my face knowing what the other half is paying .

Look different way, U.S gas price pre-cheap compair form other countries. I know the inflation is different from Japan.
    Here is math, 2.00/gallon = 0.60/liter

Right now in Japan 112yen per liter (about $3.50 a gallon) and still raising,

Also, if you want fill up 40liter you will hit pre hard. How hard do you think? Guess its $43.
