Gas prices are rising

it's more about your driving scenario, and relative to past mpg performance. 39mpg for a 16 year old car with a rebuilt battery isn't outside the envelope by any means.

 

My opinion is when my battery finally failed I was getting 39 mpgs.

In most posts on this site repaired means it was whack a mol'ed which means the modules that had failed were replaced with the same vintage year modules that are already in that car except they have not failed yet. Repaired always means its just a temporary thing because there is no brand new modules all that are available are the same G2 old modules except they may have been charged up enough to get the car down the street.

39 mpg is bad. Short trips with cold temps can do this but if the car is driven for more than ten miles and still only getting 39 mpg, something else is wronged in my experience.

 

@Another brings up a very good point. If you're making mostly short trips, 39 mpg would be normal. If you're making longer drives, I would expect more like 45-60 mpg, however that converts to metric. Colder temperatures will reduce fuel efficiency somewhat and even more so with short trips.

If short trips are not typical, it may be a combination of things like tires (pressure & type), driving style, engine tune, etc. that are adding up.

39 mpg sounds reasonable if the outside temp is 5 C and the car is driven with the climate control set to 68F or so. In addition to the heat (energy loss) to the cabin the A/C is probably also cycling to keep the windows from fogging up. Even more so if the trips are shorter than say 5 miles, where the coolant would only barely have warmed up. Do you have a grill block? Might make sense to use one with temperatures in that range. (That part is theoretical for me, it is only rarely that cold where I live.)

 

Back to the gas prices, I saw that they took a big jump today. When we left home this morning, they were about $3.459. This afternoon they at $3.999. I think that's the highest price in this area I remember ever seeing. I have seen over $4 in other states.

 

our local station jumped from $3.89 to $4.29 over the weekend, loving it.

That could explain your fuel economy. BTW, I'm pretty sure that the 2006 calls for iridium spark plugs like the newer ones.
